STEVENSON, Gae Christina

October 5, 1939 – Hanna, Alberta
April 24, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Gae Stevenson, of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 after a short battle with cancer at the age of 78 years.

Gae was born in Hanna, Alberta on October 5, 1939. She was the only girl of four children, born to Bill and Janet Griffith, and was the light of her daddy’s life. Sadly, she lost her dad at the tender age of twelve; an event she never forgot and which had a profound effect on her life.

Gae took the majority of her schooling in Hanna, worked the switchboard for A.G.T. and had an active social life. Mom liked to say that she dated often and that was how she knew that when she met Dale Stevenson that he was the one. They dated for just two months which would form a basis for a marriage that would last thirty-nine years until Dale’s untimely passing at the young age of fifty-seven. Gae and Dale married on her twenty-first birthday because that was the legal age of consent back then. Dale was only nineteen at the time and needed a consent form from his grandmother to get married. Gae and Dale lived on the family farm outside Craigmyle and with Dale’s grandmother until the birth of their two boys, Delsing and Bill. Gae told the story of one winter when the only real income they had was from Dale’s poker winnings.
The same winter a bad blizzard had left them stranded at the farm and had to be plowed out and rescued by Wayne DeGiano. They then decided it was time to move to Hanna where Gae and Dale continued to run the farm as well as run a gravel/grain trucking business.

As a family we saw our share of trials. Not long after moving to Hanna a trucking accident would see Dale faced with a broken back and a young family to raise. The following year Gae was to be diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. Dad proved the doctors wrong and recovered to some extent from his injury. Then, faced with the mortality of Gae’s problems, a decision was made to sell all endeavours in the Hanna area and move the family to Calgary where we could be close to and support Mom. Gae did recover from this and the family spent many happy years in Calgary.

Most of Mom’s working years in Calgary were spent with Shell and Placer Cego where she made many friends and was liked by all. She always had a knack for showing a special kindness to all she met. After retiring, Mom sold her house and moved to a condo in Chaparral where she became a board member and made some very special friendships which she treasured dearly.

Friendships were one of the most important things in Mother’s life. At 78 years old she was still getting together on a regular basis with many she attended high school with.

Mom’s passing will leave a huge hole in the hearts of our family and in the hearts of all who knew her.

Mom has been a wonderful and supportive Mother and Grandmother, we could not have asked for more. Our love and thanks will follow you on to your next life.

Your loving family
Delsing (Andrew), Bill (Karen), Brooklyn and Corey-Dale

Gae is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Delsing and Andrew and Bill and Karen; as well as her greatest joys, her two grandchildren, Brooklyn and Corey-Dale. She was predeceased by her husband of thirty-nine years, Dale; her parents; and her brothers, Don, Bob and Larry.

With respect to Gae’s wishes. No funeral services will be held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of Gae Stevenson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
