STEINHAUER, Andrea Ruth (Annie)

October 24, 1963 – Toronto, Ontario
July 18, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Andrea (Annie) Ruth Steinhauer.

Everyone who met Annie was touched by her genuine warmth, kindness, and generosity, as well as her brilliant mind and quick wit. She had a way of making everyone feel listened to and important.

Wealth and status meant nothing to Annie. She was incredibly humble and valued honesty, friendship, compassion, and reliability; and she had an unwavering commitment to always doing the right thing. She set the bar on how to be a good person.

Annie loved to bake and made sure to use every bowl and pan in the kitchen to accomplish her task. Once baked, she would give away all of her treats to appreciative friends.

Annie also had a passion for travel and new adventures. In preparation for a trip she would take out every travel book on our destination from the public library. Having lived with chronic illness for a long time she was determined not to miss a thing or waste a single moment. And she didn’t.

Annie may have got a lemon for a body but her heart, spirit and mind were pure gold. Always a true care taker of souls, Annie found other ways to give back when she had to give up her 23 year career as a psychologist. She continued to comfort and guide people through her blog and volunteering with her beloved Jelly at PALS.

Thank you to her incredible medical team; Dr. Kareem Jamani, Dr. Stephanie Hubbard, Dr. Lynne Savoie, Dr. Stephanie Mullin, Kerrie, Jessie, and Anita, all the angels at BMT and Chinook Hospice.

Annie is survived by her wife Judy, mother Estelle, sisters Elizabeth, Cathy and Nancy as well as her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Paul.

Funeral Services will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, (North East Corner of Highway 22X & 37th Street S.W.) on Sunday, July 22, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. with interment to follow at 37th Street Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

The family also respectfully declines flowers. Instead please make a donation to PALS (Pet Access League Society) to honour Annie’s life and her ability to bring the gift of peace, love and calm to those she and Jelly visited – 3019 – 21 St. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 7T1, phone: 403-250-7257 or donate online at www.palspets.com/donate.html. She would be so grateful.

Arrangements in care of the CHEVRA KADISHA OF CALGARY, Telephone: 403-244-4717.

  5. Brittany Minchin :

I am so very sorry of hear of Annies passing. Me and my dog Cookie had the pleasure of meeting Annie and Jelly during the intake process and info session for PALS volunteers in 2016. I could immediately tell Annie’s energy was incredibly trusting, supportive, down to earth and truly one of someone you want to get to know. I remember leaving the session thinking “What an awesome person!”.
Shortly thereafter during the Telus Christmas market at the PALS booth I was very excited to see them both again. Annie and Jelly spent the evening spreading love, telling people about the wonders of pet therapy and of course making everyone smile when Jelly let out her big beautiful bays of happiness. She was a true ray of warmth and kindness, and am thankful I had to opportunity to meet such an amazing individual.
Thank you Annie for setting the example of what we should all strive to be!
So much love to her family and friends during this difficult time.

  8. I am saddened to learn of Annie’s passing. I went to grad school with her in Waterloo and she stayed very briefly with my husband and I when she first moved to Calgary and looked for a place to live. Then I ran into her at the local library a few times over the years and most recently at a PALS screening (I think it was her screening, in fact. Must have been with Jelly). I didn’t know her well but she was always kind and friendly and helpful and clearly she was beloved by many. My heartfelt condolences on your loss.

  11. Janice Polley Miller :

It was with profound sadness that I read of Annie’s passing this week and my heartfelt condolences go to all her family. I first met Annie in 1997 when my husband died very suddenly and I had three teenagers to raise. Annie was my life line, she gave me the courage to keep going and find my strength. I’ve seen her several more times over the years and I always valued her honesty, commitment and genuine warmth. She always helped me to see the positives and she made a significant difference in our lives. I along with many others will miss her immensely. I hope you gain some comfort and strength from knowing how important she was to so many families and mine in particular.

  12. While I didn’t know Annie well , Jelly and my dog Eli , made an immediate bond at the dog park. For several months, we enjoyed many long walks together as Eli ran Jelly ragged. She was so easy to talk to , kind and positive. I always hoped they would be there when Eli and I arrived. My condolences to Judy and to the rest of Annie’s family

  14. Jewel Swanson :

Annie was a colleague at the Calgary Board of Education for a number of years and, although our paths have not crossed since that time, she left an indelible impression on me. She was an outstanding psychologist, a kind and caring person, and her warmth and caring were apparent every day, both to those of us who worked with her and to those students whose lives she touched. After she left CBE to start her own psychology practice, I referred several people to her, knowing that her compassion, knowledge, and exceptional ability to connect to people would support them in their life journey. It does not surprise me that Annie found PALS after leaving the practice of psychology and that she became as deeply involved in helping others through this organization, as she had always done as a person and as a psychologist. My deepest condolences to Judy and to Annie’s family on your loss.

She will be greatly missed by me.

Annie was one of the kindest, most thoughtful individuals that we have ever met. She was truly one of a kind and the world is a better place for having had Annie in it. Annie’s keen sense of humour made us laugh out loud and made her a joy to be around. To say that we will miss her dearly is an understatement. We will both forever cherish Annie’s friendship and keep her memory for safe keeping in our hearts. Judy know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. While you were lucky to meet and to marry the love of your life we are so sorry that Annie had to be taken from you much too soon. We wish peace for you both. Sending our love and support during this difficult time. L & B xoxo
