STANGELAND, Jeanne Phyllis (nee Duerr)

September 10, 1955 – Humboldt, Saskatchewan
December 7, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Jeanne Duerr Stangeland on December 7, 2018. Her dignity and strength in her last days mirrored the way she lived her life. Jeanne leaves her family and friends with memories of her love, kindness and generosity.

Jeanne was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, to Viola and Alfred Duerr. She is survived by her daughters, Julia Stangeland (husband Landon Nickel) and Jacqui Stangeland MacNeill; four grandchildren, Aliya and Nathan Nickel and Aria and Kaleb MacNeill; brother Al Duerr (wife Kit Chan); sisters, Ann Mueller (husband Harold) and Donna Deutscher; and her special friend Calvin Dmytar. Her parents, sisters Erma and Leona, brothers Mark and Bob, and brother-in-law Richard Deutscher predeceased her.

The youngest of eight children, Jeanne grew up on a farm north of Humboldt. She excelled in art, drama and sports. Over the years, Jeanne lived in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Calgary, Czech Republic, Dublin and returned to Calgary.

She was employed in public and gas accounting, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) degree in 2008 and completed Bow Valley College’s Unit Clerk program in 2013.

As a volunteer, Jeanne held positions as a Christian education director and Parent Teacher Council President. By the 90s, she was active in the Calgary art movement, held positions with the Federation of Canadian Artists Calgary Chapter Council and sold her work at several galleries in Calgary and Edmonton.

Jeanne travelled widely in Canada, the United States, China, South Korea and Europe.

After her return to Calgary, Jeanne was diagnosed with breast cancer, then ampullary cancer. Despite surgery, many infections and chemo, Jeanne continued to devote her time to family and friends.

Jeanne always strove to treat people with kindness and respect. She was eager to share her knowledge of fine drinks and flavours with the people around her. She loved cooking, baking and creating new recipes. Her love of art was shared with those she cared about, whether it was passing on one of her own pieces or one from her private collection.

Her family invites you to celebrate Jeanne’s life at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home . Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Jeanne Stangeland, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  10. I was at Jeanne’s Celebration of Life today, but could not stay afterwards, so I want to express my condolences to the family now.
I first met Jeanne from the Nova transition from Edmonton through my late husband. Jeanne and I had lost contact for a while, but had regained it once she moved back to Canada. Our friendship was primarily based on texting during the last while, since I was either travelling a lot, or because we just couldn’t get a day and time together.
When I got her final text about her Celebration of Life, I was sitting outside a small church in Spain, which I wasn’t going to go into, but once I got her text, I had to go in to say a prayer for her (something, I don’t really do because I am not all that religious, but with so many churches and Cathedrals in Spain, one cannot ignore God’s presence).
I am positive that Jeanne will find all of those heaven requests.
