STAMBENE, Sam

August 15, 1966 – Calgary, Alberta
January 23, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Sam, beloved husband of Melina Stambene (nee Saraceni) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the age of 52 years.

Sam touched the lives of many through his unfailing commitment to family, friends, students and youth whose lives he inspired. Sam lived life to the fullest; taking time to enjoy the important, but often simple things in life, whether it be appreciating a summit view atop a mountain while skiing, fishing, a home-cooked meal, making wine, or the simplicity of his daily espresso tradition with colleagues.

Sam’s deep-seeded Catholic faith permeated the way he engaged in life. He saw every person as God’s creation and treated everyone with compassion and respect. It was inevitable that teaching became his chosen profession.

Sam was blessed to grow up in a loving Italian family with his mother, father and two sisters. Here, he learned the value of family commitment and honouring family tradition. Sam loved to give his parents the gift of time.

Sam met his best friend Melina when they were teenagers, who ultimately became his wife. This past summer they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in Italy where they visited their roots touring the country from North to South.

Sam’s two children, Roman and Francis, were his greatest joy. When it came to play time, it was difficult to know who played harder, Sam or the boys. Sam was simply the proudest of fathers. His ultimate dream became reality when he coached his sons to Provincial Football Championships at St. Francis High School.

Sam’s first Phys. Ed. teaching role began with Rocky View School Division where he developed George McDougall High School’s first football team. In five short years, he led the Mustangs to their first and only Provincial Football Championship. As a graduate of St. Francis High school, Sam returned to Calgary Catholic School District where he attended grade school as a student and began work at St. Francis High School in 2001.

Sam’s gift was his ability to maintain meaningful life-long relationships whether he encountered people in grade school, at work or in the community.

He will be eternally loved and remembered by his wife Melina, and two sons, Roman and Francis. He is survived by his parents, Rosario and Teresa, sisters Angela (Russ) and Adelina (Brent), mother-in-law Mirka (Aldo), sisters-in-law Reana and Elisé (Tony). He will be greatly missed by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (Corner of Northmount Drive & Northland Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. Reception to follow at St. Jean Brebeuf Junior High gymnasium (located directly behind St. Luke Parish). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers and in honour of Sam’s memory, contributions may be made to the Brown’s Alumni Association in support of the St. Francis Football Program. Donations will be gratefully accepted by cheque the evening of the service, or by Etransfer: brownsalumniassociation@gmail.com

In living memory of Sam Stambene, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. CALGARY, AB, T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

We are so so sorry for your loss. We will keep you in our thoughts and in our prayers. St Francis will simply not be the same without him. As I toured colleagues today through the modernized areas, we were all deeply affected as we passed by “Sam’s new office and space”
He was a great presence in our school and a friend to most if not all of us. He certainly leaves behind a great legacy. He always spoke of his family with such high regard, it was easy to see how proud and grateful he was of you all. May God be with you through this difficult time.

Mr. Stambene, for me this news is difficult to comprehend. I had just seen you a few months ago. You had a unique way of connecting with all of your students, no matter what walk of life they came from. Myself, not being the most athletically gifted, you always pushed me to be my very best, treating me as you would a player on your team; and that I will never forget.

Please accept our deepest condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers. You were the center of Sam’s world. He spoke of you often and was never happier than when he was able to celebrate all the events of your lives, big and small. The void he leaves cannot be filled. I had the pleasure of sharing a long friendship with Sam. Sam and I spoke nearly everyday and those days were filled with laughter and joy and sadly, we also shared some tears over the years. I marveled at his ability to make deep connections with students and watched as they regularly returned to visit him. Jacob loved Coach Sammy’s passion and energy, and the incredible inspirational speeches he gave before every game we played. May the memories sustain you always.
    Sending our love,

  27. Melina, Roman,Francis, Mr. and Mrs. Stambene, Angela and Adelina,
There aren’t words to express the sadness I feel personally and for all of you. Over the last 20 months, I’ve come realize that we are on borrowed time and every minute counts. Sam made every minute count. Over the span of 52 years, Sam left a lasting and meaningful impression on everyone. Even when we first met in Jr. High, he was kind, caring, compassionate, respectful and a friend to everyone. It was at that time that I knew he was a great human being. I remember talking to Sam in November, his eyes lit up when he spoke about the beautiful trip he had taken to Italy to celebrate your 25th and your birthday.
    Always remember,
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal,
Love leaves memories no one can steal.
Cherish those beautiful memories you have of him.

Sending my love, prayers and condolences your way.

I wanted to express my sadness at hearing the news of Coach Sam’s death. He will forever be a great part of my childhood memories. Even from the time I was an eight year old boy, it was always apparent to me just how much Coach Sammy genuinely cared for his family, his students, as well as the people he coached, like myself. In many ways, talking to Coach Sam was like talking to a member of my own family. Whether he was teaching me how to fish, developing me as a basketball player, or giving me and Franky encouragement, the positive impact that Coach Sam had on me will last my lifetime.

  39. Mr. Stambene was one of the best teachers I ever had at St. Francis. I remember one afternoon when I broke down crying from extreme stress and he was the one adult who, without hesitation, put everything on hold to make sure I was okay. He was also the person who taught me how to hold a weight for the first time – he was the one teacher who fundamentally changed how I looked at health and to this day I use the skills that he taught me almost ten years ago. He was and always will be an inspiration to me as a teacher.

Although I know I was difficult as a teenager, Mr. Stambene always did his best to stir me in the right way in life, even if it meant calling my mother to notify her of me missing his class. Last night, we took the time to look at photographs of our youth, looking specifically for memories of Sam and reflecting of those days past.
We had a few memorable evenings, the one specifically where we enjoyed a midnight swim at Highwood pool will be forever cherished.
Sam was truly a special person and while life and family took in directions where we seldom had opportunity to spend enough time together; we always felt a close connection to the both of you those times our paths crossed.
We have a difficult time accepting this outcome and don’t have enough words of comfort to make accepting the loss of such a wonderful person any easier.

When I first began teaching at Saint Francis back in 2002, it was Sam who worked with me closely in the PE department. He was always so diligent at his teaching and he strived to motivate his students to do their very best, especially in terms of personal fitness and personal well being. I know he was also dedicated and terrific coach, who stayed many a long hour before and after school working with his teams. As the years went on I taught down the hall from him every day until I retired. I so enjoyed talking with him as he always had a genuine interest in our conversations. He was in deed an excellent educator and person who was respected and loved by so many. In deed his memory and good spirit will live on in all of our memories. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time, and may God Bless Sam as he rests in peace.

We are heartbroken over the loss of Sam and our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Sam was an incredible role model, a dedicated teacher, an inspiring coach, a true friend and so much more. He saw the best in all of his students and the connections he made is amazing. He will be fondly remembered by the many people whose lives he touched.
We have so many wonderful stories about the times we’ve spent together on numerous vacations sharing and enjoying a multitude of happy memories of Sam snorkelling with the kids, leading the hikes, sharing a meal, having a drink, running the workouts, playing football on the beach or in the pool….. He could make any occasion a fun time.
We are grateful that Sam was a guiding force in Patrick and Michaela’s lives at St Francis as their TA, teacher, mentor, friend and in Patrick’s case an inspiring and dedicated coach.

    Stambene Family,

The dedication and work ethic that Sam instilled in our entire championship football teams still lives with me today, and will continue to be part of who we are forever. Every single time I heard the phrase “bigger, faster, stronger” over the last 15 years I always then said “let me tell you about our HS football coach, the man built his own squat rack! That’s dedication”. St. Francis football had a massive massive influence on me and drove me to go on to play university and pro, the sole image I think of when I think of the St. Francis football weight room is Sam Stambene. Sam’s energy and positivity were of the highest I met in my lifetime. His impact on myself, my teammates and the entire St Francis legacy was immeasurable and will live on forever, forever. Thank you Sam, thank you. Our deepest condolences from our family to yours.

Our thoughts echo what so many have shared. Charlie is still in disbelief as he remembers Coach breezing by the team during the Outrun the Stigma run . Sam taught Charlie by the way he lived what was really important. Charlie worked hard for him a
because he believed Charlie could do it, but more than that Sam knew we were raising young men; he was proud of his family, the other young men he had mentored and he modelled important male friendships, he was a good friend, he let Charlie know that it was okay to reach out for help and it’s important to be a part of something bigger than yourself. We are so grateful for Sam’s presence in our son’s life and know that the St Francis experience will be forever changed.

  136. My sincere condolences to Melina, Roman, Francis, and the Stambene family. I have so many fond memories of Sam from back when we were elementary age growing up in Thorncliff (even though we attended different schools – public/catholic) to playing for the Hilltopers together, the Colts, attended U of C, and even coaching with him in Airdrie. Thinking of Sam will always bring a smile to my face and warmth to my heart. I count myself lucky to have known him and will never forget him. He was taken way to young. His impact on others will last a lifetime.

My heart sank when I heard the sad new of Sam’s passing. I first met Sam in Physical Education at the University of Calgary and we connected quite easily which speaks volumes to the kind of person he was. Super nice, friendly, and easy to talk to. Over the years, our sons played basketball together and I would often see Sam and Melina walking or running behind our house. As my three kids attended St. Francis, I would occasionally run into Sam and we would always have a good conversion. He loved his family and touched so many peoples lives. Sam gave so much of himself to his family, friends, students and the community. He leaves behind a huge void in our lives but may we take comfort in the memories we shared with him.

Our deepest condolences to the Stambene family.

  139. My heart breaks for Melina and the boys. Know that Sam loved you dearly. I got to coach with Sam for several years, and Sam coached my son, Sammy as well. Sam lived the lessons that we learned playing at St. Francis for Gary Deman which simply stated, “Team before self”. Sam was indeed selfless, and because if this had such a profound influence on so many young lives. I’m still in shock after hearing of his passing, but what an incredible legacy he has left behind him. The greatest goal any human can have is to leave this world a little better than when you came in. Sam touched, shaped and influenced many. It was an honour to have had an opportunity to know him personally. Sam, Rest In Peace. You’ve made such a huge, positive difference to so many.

Melina, Roman, and Francis words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss.

Coach Sam was the most passionate role model and mentor that I could have asked for. When he first coached me in Peewee I knew that I could not wait to be a St. Francis Brown. I first met Sam as a friend of my parents and then he was my coach and TA at St. Francis but he became so much more to me. He was also my friend and like a father figure. I knew he always had my interests at heart. He saw the best in people and was there for any of us who needed a moment of his time. I feel truly blessed to have gotten to know Coach over the course of my life and I will miss him every day. Coach Sam was the best motivator. I still remember the speech he gave before our Junior City Final to the Gladiator theme song. We could feel the passion that he had for the game and the words he shared with us not only helped motivate the way we played the game but the way we can continue to live our lives, being there for our team and for our family. Coach Sam made St. Francis a family for all of us who had the privilege of being coached by him. His strong work ethic and passion for always doing your best resonates with me every day. His dedication to fitness and teaching us proper technique in the weight room is legendary. The music he played during workouts was always entertaining. Workday Wednesdays will be one of my favorite memories of time spent at St. Francis. Having the opportunity of coaching by his side over the last two years has been an amazing experience from which I’ve learned so much. Sharing a beer with him after our Provincial Championship in Fort Mac will be one of my fondest memories.

He has inspired so many people throughout his career and will be truly missed.

    RIP Coach

There are just no words. We consider Sam part of the village who helped raise our children. He coached Jesse in football and although he taught him how to be a better player, more importantly he taught him how to be a good man. Grace and Frankie have been friends since they were little and Grace adored and admired Sam. His kindness and influence always gave us peace of mind that Our children were always safe with him. He made a difference, and we are grateful that we had the opportunity to have known him. We will forever be here for you all, you are loved.

Please accept our condolences for you and your family. Combining the thoughts and words of my former students who went to St Francis, three of our kids who graduated from St Francis and Zoe, who is set to become a Saraceni, it is easy to see Sam was a great person, mentor and coach who truly loved people and his vocation. In the times we met Sam he came across as such a caring person and someone who more than rivalled my storytelling abilities. He will be missed.

Our hearts ache for your loss. From the first time our family met yours on the football fields in Edgemont, we were taken by your family’s closeness & the caring nature of each of you. Sam was a wonderful man, a pillar in his community, & a roll model for those around him (of any age). I could always count on that knowing glance, smile, or nudge on the sidelines or in the stands, & sometimes even when we crossed paths at work or shopping.

Thank you all for sharing Sam with us on those long evenings each fall.

Dear Melina, Roman, Francis and Stambene Family:

I feel so blessed to have known and been a friend of Sam during our years together at St. Francis High School. He was a sweet man: thoughtful, caring, kind, and generous.
I was always very glad to see him coming down the hallway. He had such a glow that it could always lift you up. And no matter how busy he might be he always stopped to chat. We had many wonderful conversations.
Sam took joy in life and it was very nice to be around. You could tell that he lived his faith deeply. You could just feel it! One day we were talking and he suggested that we hook up at St. Pius X after school for weekday mass. We did and it was great. It was like going to church with your brother. I have always remembered it as something very special.
Last year, he volunteered to draw up an individual exercise program for me to do at home. He showed me the details and explained all the reasoning behind them. He was a busy man but he took time for a friend to make the plan and answer all my questions.
He encouraged me to feel free to work out where he taught at the school fitness room. (Every time I went he offered to start up some coffee too!)

Most of all, though, I remember from our conversations, Sam’s goodness and how evident it was that he cared so much for you his family, for his colleagues, for the players he coached and for the students he taught.

May the Lord console you with His tender and abiding presence during this hard time and always.

Melina, Roman and Francis, we are heart broken. Sam has been a dear friend with whom we have shared some of the greatest moments in life together. As my fellow coach, I was fortunate to feel Sam’s passion for sport, kids and life by merely standing next to him. Standing next to Sam on the field and in the locker room, his words of encouragement and inspiration towards his players were always sincere as they started from his heart and straight to our ears. Foremost, Sam delivered and stayed true to his message with the conviction of a skilled leader. What I learned from Sam is that football was not bigger than life, but rather, it was a way to unselfishly share one of the great joys of life with friends, students, parents and ultimately, his two sons. Sam sincerely served others first through coaching and that is a gift that so many of us are thankful for having received from him. With great honour, I am proud to say that I was his friend and will never forget his passion for life, love for family and his leadership in our community. While we march on through sorrow or great times, while on the field or at home, Sam you will always be with us when we ask St. Francis to, “Pray For Us!”

Words cannot express how shocked and saddened we were to hear this devastating news. Sam was such an amazing, caring, and warm individual. We have so many great memories as neighbors, going to Kimberley, on fishing adventures and in more recent years just fun evenings getting together with the two of you. Even though we didn’t get together often, it was like no time had passed at all whenever we did. Mel, Roman & Frankie, our hearts are breaking for you. Please know that we are thinking and praying for you. Biggest hugs ever. Alice & Terry

  198. Utterly shocked and saddened by the news of a great man’s passing. Sam was an incredibly respected man, teacher, coach and friend. He touched many thousands who have, in one way or another, been shaped by his guidance, his kindness and the role model that he provided us. Shakespeare gave voice to how so many must feel at this tragic news: “He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again.”

Always part of the team yet always finding time to share a quiet moment with a friend. So many of us loved Sam from the moment we met him…and we’re all just heartbroken.

Deepest condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Stambene, Angela, and Adelina. Your wonderful son and brother touched so many lives. Dear Melina, Roman, Francis and the entire Stambene & Saraceni Families

There are no words to describe the shock and sadness our family feels with Sam’s sudden passing. Sam made an impact on all of our lives. He was like a big brother to me during our St. Helena, St Francis and University of Calgary days. My father, Larry Poscente, coached Sam when he played Bantam Football with the Hilltoppers and even then, his dedication, skill and hard work was evident. Whether he was a St. Helena Hawk or a St Francis Brown, his pride and loyalty for his school was extremely important to him. Sam was a kind and generous soul who genuinely loved people and was always interested to hear how life was going for you. His love, devotion, faithfulness and commitment to his family, friends, students and community was paramount. He was an exceptional teacher, coach and mentor to our children, Ryan & Brianne and to countless others . He was greatly loved and well respected by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him and he will be dearly missed. Sam was larger than life and one of a kind. We are all better people for having had the pleasure and honor of knowing him.

Our hearts, love and prayers go out to you all during this time of sorrow.

I offer you my deepest condolences. I was deeply saddened when I hard of Mr. Stambene’s passing. When I think back to my days as a student at St. Francis, the most positive memories I have are of the days I spent in Sports Performance class with Mr. Stambene. He made the St. Francis weight room a place where challenges were overcome, lessons were learned, and life long memories were made. Mr. Stambene was the positive role model that many young men such as myself needed at that time in our lives. I accredit my high school success and much of my success today to the lessons of commitment, hard work, and faith learned from Mr. Stambene. He truly changed lives through the work he did and the passion he had for his students. Mr. Stambene will be greatly missed.

  257. Back in the days when Sam & I was doing our workouts at the university, he always gave me the impression that he’s larger than life, cheerful and always in good spirits. I remember there is one time that Sam was jumping over joy telling me how well his pay grade was at Safeway.

In the dynasties of Chinese history, majority of the times they were at wars. Internal wars cause a lot of innocent lives, and the idea of living to an old age didn’t exist. In turn, they learned to live a meaningful life and made good use of the time that they were alive and done something significant that they were proud of themselves.

Reading thru the condolences on this page, even though Sam didn’t live a full life, I’m glad to know that he has made so many profound impacts to the younger generation as a school teacher. Sam will be deeply missed.

Melina, Roman, Francis, the Stambene and Saracini familues. I am so very sorry and extremely saddened to hear of Sam’s passing and extend my deepest condolences to you. I have very fond memories of Sam from the first time we met in Junior high, to playing football together in high school and bumping into him during our time in university. More recently I would occassionally see Sam running the around confederation golf course as I would drive home for lunch living only a few blocks from St. Francis, and I always admired his conviction to stay fit and enjoyed our conversations whenever I would see him. A measure of a man is not what he acquires in life. It’s the relationships and indelible memories that he creates with those around him. Sam exemplified this in every aspect. My thoughts and prayers are with you through this very difficult time.

  259. It is with great sorrow that we pass on our condolences to the Stambene family and the St. Francis community. I feel privileged to have worked with Sam for more than a decade and also to have had him share his gifts with our son Alan when he taught him.
Sam and I shared many conversations about family and fitness over the years and his passion for both was clearly evident. Sam was one of those special teachers that I was always able to count on to help a student that needed a little more TLC. What was so remarkable about Sam, was that regardless of if the student’s problems, or the extra work involved, he welcomed them with with open arms and was always willing to help. I know his selflessness was shared with many and he will be so sadly missed.
May you be comforted by the love and many gifts he has shared.
    God bless,
    Jan Ritter and family

Sorry for your loss of Sam. Although we have lost touch over the years, whenever we crossed paths, Sam always brought a smile to my face. From when we started teaching together 27ish years ago all of my memories are of good times and friendship. Sam’s legacy will live on in your boys and the students he has touched.

Melina, Roman and Francis. Sam coached our Hilltoppers bantam football team 26 years ago. He was just a young man starting as a coach. To us, Sam was work ethic personified. “Dig deeper, run harder, protect the ball” – our daily mantra. We all believed that we could get better and that football practice would get us there. We trusted him when we ran those hills for the 10th lap after practice and when we played with frozen hands in the snow. We trusted in Sam that good people who work hard get rewarded.

I still walk through the grounds of the old Mewata stadium on my way in to work in the mornings. I can see our old team running the ball off tackle in the midfield, Sam on the sideline with his shorts and his clipboard. Sam impressed on all of us of the importance of being good, hard working people, because he was. I’ve trusted him implicitly since. Thank you Coach.

It is difficult to express in words the shock and sadness we are feeling after hearing about Sam’s passing. We knew Sam to be a loving husband, proud father and loyal friend. Jeff knew Mr. Stambene to be the coolest teacher at St Francis and after speaking with other students, from St. Francis, this was to common image of Sam. Sam inspired and supported so many of these students. He will not be forgotten and his legacy will live on within the walls of the school that he was such an integral part of. May he Rest In Peace. Melina, Roman, and Francis,
Words cannot begin to describe the pain we are feeling in our hearts over the loss of our beloved Sam.
He taught our kids, he coached our kids, and he was a wonderful friend. Besides Laurie and I there is no single person that has had a greater influence on the lives of our children than Sam. We are all better people for having known him. Our world will never be the same without Sammy in it.
Our families created countless memories together. Whether at a beach in Hawaii, a water park in Idaho, the strip in Vegas, or just sitting at our kitchen tables, time spent with Sam was always golden. We will hold those memories in our hearts forever.
Melina, Roman, and Francis, you are our family. Sam was like a brother to Laurie and I, and like a dad to our kids. Know that we are here for you, no matter what you need.
Sammy, we love you, and we will miss you.
    Rest in peace my friend.

  275. On behalf of the Hewlett family.
I would like to send our most sincere condolences. Sam Stambene was more then a teacher, He was a driving force to many individuals including myself. His compassion and incredible positivity in fitness and sports left me in constant inspiration. Mr. Stambene’s vigorous perseverance and enthusiasm was like no other. I always came to his class ready to work harder then the day before, he introduced me into fitness and over the last two years it’s been a continuous building block of my life. I remember every Wednesday, him and I would do the gruelling “thrusters” workout, I don’t think we ever missed a week! It was with his leadership I was able to push new boundaries and be able to face adversity directly. I achieved much success in the lessons he taught and will continue to do so in the future. He was by far one of the greatest teachers, leaders and friends you could ever have.
My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to you, Melina, Frank, Roman.
He spoke of you all with such pride and admiration, his love for you all was so vibrant.
May God be with you in these hard times.
