ST. JOHN, Ross Hartley

August 9, 1930 – Deloraine, Manitoba
June 25, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Ross Hartley St. John of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at the age of 88 years after a brief illness, following a fall.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years Gwen (Hatch), daughter Kim and her husband Barry Pike, and their sons Richard (Catherine), Greg (Lori), Stephen (Jenn) and Matthew; daughter Irene; his surrogate son Rob Hume and family; and his nephew, Trent St. John. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Ellen (nee Brown) St. John; brother Glover; and brother and sister-in-law Monty and Edna St. John.

This kind, gentle and generous man’s physical presence and sense of humour will be missed, while his influence on those around him will be felt for generations to come. He was an excellent cook, and used those skills early in life as a short order cook. He applied to Trans Canada Airlines as a sheet metal worker, but thanks to his culinary history was hired as a purser, and rose to management with Air Canada over a thirty-two year career. After his retirement he enjoyed gardening, golfing, hunting and curling. He loved the outdoors and the land, and sought to share that love with his family and friends, and wrote poetry about his experiences – It was the mornings he loved, watching the sun come up through the trees.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no service – take a walk in the woods in his honor.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Ross St. John, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

  2. Gwen and family – I’m so sorry for your loss. Ross was just a great man. He was instrumental in hiring me to work in Calgary when the In-Flight Service base opened in 1978. He was always available, helpful and encouraging. I know we go back further than that, all the way back to the Milton, ON days but my memories are mostly of the great team he built at the Air Canada office in Calgary. We had some pretty great years with him at the helm. My heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. Cherish your wonderful memories.

  3. He’d like that obituary. Maybe tell a joke about it. He was a fine pool player as well. He’d test your game before he’d play his best, and if you weren’t a strong player he’d go easy. That kindness was in everything that he did, of course. Not just games.
He taught me how to make pizza. I still cut mushrooms precisely how he showed me, and he taught me more than that. I enjoyed our conversations immensely. I once stayed with Ross and Gwen in Calgary for a visit, and it was a wonderful and enriching time.
My sincerest condolences to everyone who knew Ross. He was a wonderful man and he will be greatly missed. We were lucky to know him.

  5. Dear Gwen: Mark & Sylvia Ketler enjoyed many conversations in the back alley during the years we were neighbours in Silver Springs. Ross certainly loved to do a lot of walking. May he rest in peace. Our thoughts are with you.
