SPARKS, Randall Todd

May 19, 1960 – Calgary, Alberta
June 3, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with immense sadness, sorrow and beyond belief that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, son, brother, friend, and colleague. Todd lit up the world with his generosity, laughter, storytelling and care for others. These are traits that he inherited from his loving parents, Ann and Terry Sparks. Todd was the proud father of two vibrant girls, Megan Sparks Lloyd (Tim) and Courtney Sparks. He truly loved mountainous landscapes through skiing, hiking and golfing but most importantly, he was a man of kindness and generosity. Todd gave a mountain of love to his daughters, family and friends.

Todd’s passing comes at a time of such joy with his engagement to the love of his life, Sheila Hellevang. He just spent a month of skiing with family and friends and improving his golf game. Todd was looking forward to the arrival of his great-niece.

Todd was born in Calgary where he spent many years in hockey, badminton, golf, football, but really pursued ski racing at Panorama, B.C. Todd relished Christmases at Lake Windermere surrounded by family where he would participate in skiing, skating, playing pickup hockey games, singing Christmas Carols, and gathering the Christmas tree with family and friends. Summers at the lake were spent putting in the family garden, waterskiing, and taking care of the boat. Todd instilled the same love of Windermere as his daughters later enjoyed these same activities with him.

Todd attended Washington State University in Pullman, Washington which was a family tradition. He achieved his Economics Degree and furthered his love of skiing on the Washington State University Ski Team. He was also the Treasurer of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Todd was a Vice President and Investment Advisor for RBC Dominion Securities. His thirty-five year career began in 1983. RBC recognized Todd’s many accomplishments over the years as he provided a high level of service and advice. Many of his clients became his friends.

Todd’s generosity was shown through volunteer work as he participated for five years driving for the Calgary Stampede Courtesy Car Committee. He especially enjoyed mentoring his Little Brother while volunteering for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization.

Todd is survived by his wife, Sheila Hellevang; his children, Megan Sparks Lloyd (Tim), Courtney Sparks; his parents, Ann and Terry Sparks; his siblings, Lynn Sparks, Wade Sparks (Mikki); his nieces and nephews, Cody Scott (Stephanie), Jack Sparks, Spencer Sparks, Kailey Sparks; his Uncle Bob Vallat (Mary); his cousins, Brent Vallat (Sylvia), Dianne Vick (Joe), Andy Cameron (Karen), Andrew Vallat, Lya Vallat (Ashley), John Vallat (Barbara) and many other cousins and relatives.

Todd is predeceased by his grandparents; Eugene & Marion Vallat, Dorothy Sparks Driessen & Leonard Sparks as well as his Aunt Sally & Uncle Larry Cameron.

A Celebration of Todd’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at Calgary Golf & Country Club (one block west of the intersection of Elbow Drive & 50th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Calgary & Area, 5945 Center Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2H0C2, Telephone: (403) 777-3535, www.bbbscalgary.ca, or The Prostate Cancer Centre of Calgary, #6500, 7007 – 14 Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2V 1P9, Telephone: (403) 943-8888, www.prostatecancercentre.ca/keep-it-in-calgary/.

  5. SCOTT KRUSE :

Todd and I both ended up in the investment business. Every couple of years we would need stock market therapy from each other. It was the kind of camaraderie Marines have towards each other after being under heavy attack. No one can understand it unless you’ve lived through it. Todd had the short end of the stick because the Canadian Stock Market is heavily weighted towards mining and oil issues, which tend to be quite volatile. After about 30 years of booms and busts, I was just amazed at how well he had adapted.

I had lunch with Todd and his daughter Megan at the Roanoke Tavern on Mercer Island, WA. a few years ago. It was the last Cougar Seattle game weekend, whenever that was. I remember thinking Todd has the world by the balls.

I am devastated. Todd will be missed by all. At least he left us in the outdoors, which he loved.

So sorry to hear of Todd’s passing. So tragic. Todd and I were school mates from grade 1 through 12. We lived a block apart in Bel Aire. We actually walked to our first day of grade one together with our friend Peter Shipley. I lost track of Todd until our 30th high school reunion in 2008. We will miss him at our 4oth reunion this fall. So sad to see this happen. My wife Jocelyne and I send our deepest condolences.

Had the pleasure to meet Todd many years ago when starting with RBC. Todd offered to take some rookies for a round of golf and chatted with us the business of banking. Years later our paths crossed in Windermere where our families shared a community beach. Our condolences to Todd’s entire family as you all deal with this tragic loss.

  17. I met Todd through his lovely fiance Sheila while working at Gibson Energy and instantly we became ‘Ski Buddies’ for 8 years. We would ski Panorama, BC often and even venture to other hills depending on the powder. Todd was one of those guys that welcomed anyone on the ski trail and always waited for them in case they were in danger and out of sight. We moved from winter sports to summer sports at Invermere/Windermere where many of us would go boating together, Todd couldn’t wait to get the family boat in the water when the May long weekend approached. It was like one BIG family at the Sparks cabins and I will remember those fun times we all had, enjoying a beer watching the sunset. Todd, you will be so missed and Invermere/Windermere/Panorama will not be the same without you. Sending my sincere and deepest condolences to Sheila and the Sparks family in this terrible loss of a man that was full of life!

My deepest condolences to the Sparks family. It was Just June first at the Presidents Party that Todd and I waxed reminiscent about his time at HWW as my student. He also talked about his crossroads in life. To know Todd was to love him! I found him to be a wonderful human being: especially caring and responsive to others. What a loss! If I may be permitted to paraphrase John Donne: Any man’s death diminishes us because we are all involved in mankind.

Todd became my financial advisor in 1991 when my late husband and I answered a call meant for my daughter in law but I jumped in and told him we were looking for someone like him. Over the 27 years he was always diligent in researching every opportunity he presented. Although we met face-to-face twice, the first time when he took over my RRSP and subsequently all of our investments and again at my retirement in 1999, I knew he was not only an advisor but a trusted friend. He never failed me and his advice was always in my best interest. I trusted him implicitly and told him so many times. I will miss him for the rest of my days. My sincere condolences to the family and finally I must say that he left us far too young.
