SMITH, Hayden Edwin

October 8, 1930 – Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
April 19, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with love and sadness we announce the passing of Hayden Smith in Calgary, AB, on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the age of 87 years.

Hayden was raised on the family farm in Crestwynd, SK, by his mother Emalina Smith and father Harry Smith. The family moved to Calgary in 1938. He graduated from Crescent Heights High School and was a star athlete on the basketball and track and field teams. Hayden met the love of his life, Veronica “Roni” Murphy in 1950, they married in St. Mary’s Cathedral on February 9, 1952. They built a strong family life together and had five children, Don (Susie), Barry (deceased), Gordon, Marlene (Dom) Kelly, and Carolyn (Jamie) Moroney. They joined the Glencoe Club in 1962 where all the family participated in many sports; Hayden in Squash, becoming a Squash Jester. In 1970 they bought the family cabin on Sylvan Lake where the family enjoyed many good barbecues, boating and snowmobiling for forty years. They bought their first condo in Palm Springs in 1977 and moved to their second condo in 2001. Hayden and Roni enjoyed many winters at their home down South and golfing at the O’Donnell Country Club. In 1967 they moved into the family home in Kelvin Grove where they lived for forty-four years. There were many parties with friends at Kenosee Place where they loved to entertain. The kids also enjoyed parties at “the Ranch” with their friends. Hayden and Roni loved visiting with their eight grandchildren, Stephen, Natalie (Ben Shaub) and Michael Smith, Jarod Smith, Matthew and Katrina Kelly and Sean and Phil Moroney. They also have five great grandchildren, Rocky (Stephen), Isabella, Ethan, Emalina and Spencer (Natalie). He started his career with New York Life in 1950 and built a successful business serving his clients as a Chartered Life Underwriter. He was New York’s Life’s top agent in Canada several times in the 1970’s and a founding member of Million Dollar Round Table’s Top of the Table. Hayden was a big contributor to everything he got involved with. His legacy of giving back had many aspects to it: In 1971 he was President of the Life Underwriters Association of Canada; he was very active in the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party in the early 70’s and was instrumental in the campaign that got Peter Lougheed elected as Premier of Alberta in 1971, Chairing the PC Convention that year. He was the spark plug to giving The Calgary Foundation a re-boot in 1978, Chairing Calgary’s first “Million Dollar Dinner”. The Foundation raised $1,800,000 that night, an impressive sum forty years ago. The Foundation’s assets increased six fold overnight and they never looked back. He was named an Honorary Director of The Calgary Foundation. Hayden Chaired the Downtown Rotary Club’s Annual Fundraising Dinner many times in the 1980’s bringing in world renowned key note speakers to sell out attendance. He was a six year member of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in the 1980’s.

Hayden was a visionary and made it happen in his life but always with the love and support of his devoted wife, Roni. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219 – 18th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. All of Hayden’s friends are invited to the reception at the Glencoe Club immediately following the funeral Mass.
