Condolence Messages

  1. Praying for you as you miss Bernie, but we know that you are rejoicing he is with the Lord. I remember Bernie from a Youth For Christ Rally in Huntsville, Ontario, many years ago. He put together a youth choir from the youth attending the rally, and one of my older sisters was privileged to sing in his choir.
In Calgary, we would see him at BCM events and at City wide prayer rallies, where his presence was always an encouragement. It seemed like he never grew older. Certainly, he was always young in spirit because of his exuberance for the Lord.

Marg and all your family: Barrie seems so long ago and far away, but the memories of working together there are vivid. The Maxwell’s and the Ford’s were stalwart friends. We learned of Bernie’s death and feel sad that our lives have not intersected for many years. Perhaps Heaven will allow us that privilege. Music and youth are at the heart of our mission. Bernie was our model. Grief know no boundaries, but faith and hope are gifts of God. Much love to you all. Mair and Denny, (Whitby, Ontario)

Our dear brother, Bernie, was a dear friend. Our friendship extends over a 60+ year span. Many years ago, Bernie shared the Gospel with me and lived to see the fruition of the seed he planted in my life as he walked with God. Bernie was a true friend, a great musician and a disciple of Christ with a great sense of humor. He will be missed. But, we rejoice in his homegoing as he rests in the arms of His Savior. God bless his family.

I first experienced the joy of singing under Bernie at Urbana 76 then 79 and 81. He became a mentor to me as a young IVCF staff member in Ontario. His laughter, straight forward messages on Quiet Time are still fresh in my mind. I last saw Bernie run in the senior olympics in Phoenix. My life impacted my life. I want to thank Marg, Ruth and Jonathan for sharing him with so many others. His leading of “Man of Sorrows” at Urbana Missions Conference moved me to tears. I look forward to the heavenly choir and hearing Bernie’s laugh.

  10. I was saddened to hear Bernie had passed away, yet rejoice he has graduated to his heavenly home. Bernie will always hold a special place in my heart for it was he who prayed with me to receive Christ many years ago. I know, love, and follow Jesus today because of Bernie’s faithfulness to share the gospel and I am eternally grateful. I look forward to seeing my dear brother again in heaven one day and being among the crowd who gather around him to say, “I’m here because of you.” May all who grieve Bernie’s passing be comforted by the reality that he is home with the Lord he loved and served so faithfully. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:7-8). Well done, Bernie. You were a good and faithful servant.

  14. Bernie was one of those people that I somehow thought would live forever! It was an honor to know, and be known by, him. His smile and laugh were warm and contagious, and he is someone that I looked up to my whole life. Heaven is richer, but my heart breaks for his earthly family. Love and prayers to you all. I’m sorry that I cannot be at his memorial.

  18. Sherrill O'Neil

    Dear Marg and Family.
I was so sorry to hear the news of Bernie’s passing but then I rejoiced to know that he is absent from his body and present with the Lord!! What a wonderful promotion for him and how happy he must be. He will be singing with the angels!! I have such wonderful memories of Bernie and the years of our Children’s Acapella Choir in Windsor. I just recently unearthed the record we made and all the memories flooded back. Bernie was a terrific choir director who loved each of us with so much enthusiasm. He embodied and shared the love of God and the message of the gospel wherever he went. I wish I could be there to remember Bernie with you on Saturday but please know that my love and my thoughts will be with you. And I pray and know that the Lord of Glory will meet each of you there, comforting you and giving you His peace through the days ahead. Much love, Sherrill (Lynn) O’Neil

  19. Bernie led our mass chior in Three Hills just over 20 years ago. I was in grade 11 or 12 and sang with around 400 students. He was the type of person that one like immediately! He was so animated that I loved every minute singing in his choir. I can even remember the songs he directed. Never have I had a more amazing time singing in a choir. I can only imagine the singing in heaven as Bernie meets his savior. My condolences as you miss this wonderful man.

I am so pleased to have known Bernie; his exuberant smile was always a “flash of The Lord’s Light” to my soul. He was certainly a blessing to all of us members of The Berg Chorale, led initially by Ferd Berg. It surely will be a time of rejoicing for Bernie and Ferd in Heaven.

  21. I remember Bernie from years ago as he visited us at Bonavista Baptist Church, here in Calgary.
What a bright light he was and always seemed to remember you even as years passed and our paths would somehow cross. I remember his smile, his love of Jesus and his love of music. He certainly made the choir “rock and praise”. Bernie will certainly be bringing a smile to Jesus face.
    A Classic guy.

  23. Dear Margaret and family,
We are deeply saddened to hear Bernie has passed, but know in our hearts he is with our Heavenly Father. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all. We are forever grateful to Bernie for his deliverance ministry. Our family is restored because of Bernie’s calling from God!
One of our favourite memories of Bernie was many years ago. We were camp directors at Gull Lake. We had kids in elementary school. We were looking for a dynamic speaker for the kids. We contacted Bernie and asked if he could help out. As only Bernie could do, he laughed and said he had something very special. It was the memorized story from Daniel 3 of the fiery furnace. It was so cool as the kids could follow along in their bibles. The best part was when he got to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the furnace. The kids were mesmerized as he told the story along with dramatization and the occasional ad-lib. He said “when they were in the fiery furnace not a hair was singed on their bodies. They didn’t come out black like me!” Then he did his amazing laugh. To this day people still talk about that week and the impact it had. Thanks Bernie!!!

  27. Dear Marg and family, Sharing in your loss as you mourn the passing of Bernie. What a privilege to have been in his choir during my high school years!! I absolutely LOVED singing the old hymns (still love them), practices and performances with Bernie, and the friendships developed in the choir. I was also at several Urbanas where he led singing..a taste of heaven. Maybe he will lead choirs of thousands of worshippers in heaven!! I would love to be in that choir!! With love, Joyce Hopwood.
