SMITH, Duane Harold

November 11, 1945 –Wiarton, Ontario
June 20, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Duane Smith on June 20, 2018 at the age of 72 years in Calgary, AB. Duane is survived by his loving wife of 45 years May (nee Leong); his daughter Natasha (Travis) Rowden and son Nathan. He also leaves behind two grandchildren that were the absolute joy of his life, Reese and Tate; and will be dearly missed by a network of friends and colleagues, not to mention several local coffee establishments that have lost a valued customer.

Duane was an only child growing up in Tobermory, Ontario where he was the son of a craftsman/fisherman/parkguide and a school teacher. He met and married his wife in Vancouver and later moved to Calgary where they settled to start a family. Duane found great satisfaction in his career as a butcher and union representative as getting food to people and making personal connections brought him immense joy. He will be remembered for his boisterous laugh and eagerness to help.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the care team at the Foothills Medical Centre for their expertise and compassion; and also encourage those who are able and willing to consider a donation to the Canadian Blood Services.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with a Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Afterwards the family would like to extend a reception invitation to family and friends in attendance. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Duane Smith, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

Duane and I where first cousins and spent most of our time together as children
    together in Tobermory.Uncle Lloyd,Duanes’s father was a great “craftsman”as
he alone built my mother a sailboat when she was sixteen and she sailed
    around Tobermory channels regularly.
Unfortunately in the recent past I have seen Duane only a few times at funerals and some wedding.
My husband John and I will think and pray for your family at this most difficult time.
