SMEATON, Donald Thomas

August 11, 1945 – Newcastle upon Tyne, England
July 26, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Don Smeaton, beloved husband of Debbie Smeaton (nee Frank) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2019 at the age of 73 years.

Don had a good life, travelling the world to work in his younger years and landing in Canada in the 70’s on a bet and making it his home. He married Debbie in 1979, almost making the forty year milestone this September 1st. Don spent many years contracting with the Boilermakers Union, Lodge 149, traveling again but this time closer to home. Don and Debbie were fortunate enough to also be able to travel to Europe and to Eastern Canada visiting family and to holiday, enjoying the company of nieces and nephews along the way. Debbie was fortunate that Don and her mom were good buddies and she joined them on many trips to Nova Scotia. Retirement was not easy for Don as he missed the comradery of his co-workers and the feeling of accomplishment for many jobs well done. He was happy when he found volunteer work at the Calgary Food Bank, and the friendships and work that provided him with purpose. Don and Debbie both enjoyed trips to Century Casino in Calgary – Debbie to gamble and Don to keep her to an hour time limit and to visit with staff in the Casino.

He had a hard fought battle with lung cancer, and he stayed with us as long as he could manage. He died peacefully with close family around him and his favorite music playing. Don had a good heart and we are appreciative of the number of people in his life that took the time to get to know that. He will be missed.

Don is survived by his loving wife Debbie, his sister Jennifer’s children, Geoffrey and Catherine Forster; nieces, Breanne and Kristen Landels; Peter and Patti (Boyle); and Debbie’s large family in Ontario who are all appreciated in our lives. Thank you all for your support. Don was predeceased by his father Thomas, mother Elizabeth, sister Jennifer, and baby brother Thomas.
