SHIELS, Sophie Marie

February 26, 1934 – Cardston, Alberta
June 20, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Sophie Shiels passed away surrounded by family on June 20, 2019 at the age of 85.

Sophie was born in Cardston, Alberta to Fred and Mary Shostak on February 26, 1934. She was raised on the family farm with her brother Bill until they moved to Lethbridge. It was here that she met and married the love of her life, Ray, on August 15, 1953. They had two wonderful children together, their daughter Marlene and their son Gary.

In the early sixties, they pulled up roots and moved to Calgary to start one of their many successful business ventures. Besides working side by side with her husband, she also did a lot of volunteering and fundraising for many different organizations. Her favorite was Crohn’s and Colitis, where she sold many Christmas Cakes and worked long hours in Bingo halls.

She had a passion for making her paper tole pictures that she promised to all of her children and grandchildren. She also loved going camping and fishing with family and friends. No matter what life dealt her, she was a Firecracker who always faced her battles with incredible strength and an amazing sense of humor.

She will always be remembered with love by her son and daughter, Marlene (Darcy) and Gary (Ola); her grandchildren, Jeff (Leah), Amanda (Nino), Paula (Jesse); and the reason for her living , her great-grandchildren, William, Colton, Amarra and Isla. She is also survived by her brother Bill and her brother-in-law Tom and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ray in 2018, as well as her parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, parents-in-law, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
