Marcia , I am so sorry for your loss. Muriel’s passing is a loss not only to your family but the Perioperative community in Alberta, Canada and globally.
I had the blessing of having met Muriel on my arrival in Canada 17 years ago. She became my mentor a few years late and shaped who I am today as a Perioperative Registered Nurse. I will forever cherish the opportunity I had to tell her in person how her life influenced mine at the ORNAC conference in Niagara a few weeks go. I am where I am and who I am as a perioperative nurse because of Muriel.
Your legacy will live on in the many perioperative nurses lives you touched, in the work they in turn do for patient advocacy and safety.
Rest in peace Muriel.

Condolence from Norma Thurston on May 14th, 2017 7:35 PM

I was very sorry to learn of Muriel’s passing. I was her colleague for 10 years when she was the Director of Perioperaive Nursing and I was the Director of Nursing Research/Quality/Education at Foothills Hospital. It may have been an unlikely pairing in terms of nursing background but we were very good friends and sounding boards, trusted each other and laughed a lot together. Muriel was a superb educator, not only to impart knowledge but also in challenging students and graduates to provide higher levels of nursing care. She used her position and authority to ensure patients received excellent care. Muriel was hardworking in a variety of health care settings and knew what she wanted to accomplish. She cared deeply about her staff and even more deeply about her family. She loved each of you, was proud of your successes and felt it personally if your path was rough. Beginning in 1998, a few nursing friends have had an annual “self care” dinner to keep in touch. Muriel was an important part of our group. I will remember her with much fondness and respect. She has left a wonderful legacy in her 4 children and many grandchildren as well as in her professional contributions to the field of Perioperaive nursing. Unfortunately I am unable to be at her service on May 17/2017.

I came to know Muriel when she was assigned the task of being the contact between the hospital “hierarchy” and the Lions Eye Bank (Alberta) Society. The Society’s purpose was to supply corneas from donors for transplantation by Alberta ophthalmologists. There were many ‘challenges’, and Muriel was always there to help us meet them, to the point that she finally agreed to join our Board of Directors. at a time when I was Chairperson. Knowing about her other regular duties, we considered it an honour for her to help our own voluntary service to Albertans.

Marcia, Michael, MaryAnn and Michelle. We were so saddened to hear of your mothers passing. She was a formidable woman who loved her family deeply, had a fantastic sense of humour and was very straight forward when things got tough. She was an amazing source of help and strength to my brother and I during our father’s end of life care. She cared deeply and helped many. I think she worked harder in retirement than any I’ve met. I remember meeting her in a gas station washroom in Red Deer a few years after my dad had passed away- she was going one way and I the other. We never got to connect in person again but I enjoyed chatting with her on the phone. Remember the good times. Many hugs to each of you. May she rest in peace.

Condolence from Margaret Fullerton on May 17th, 2017 12:03 AM

I first met Muriel at the first ORNAC conference in Jasper. I was a young ‘assistant head nurse’ from surgical services in Saskatoon, and was in complete awe of Muriel’s knowledge, expertise, confidence and leadership. Many years later, I had the privilege of working with her when I moved to Calgary, and continued to be in awe of her dedication, passion, knowledge and commitment to high standards of care in peri-operative nursing in Calgary, Canada and internationally. She placed quality patient care at the center of her practice, and worked tirelessly to ensure this care would be echoed in surgical suites across the city and across the county. Along the way, there are so many wonderful memories of great fun and boisterous laughter. Muriel leaves a legacy of quality and service to the patients of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and beyond. My very sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Muriel’s family, whom she adored. May you find some measure of comfort and peace in the true legacy and lasting memories of your Mom, Grandma, who so many of us admire and hold in the utmost respect and admiration. We will never forget her.

Condolence from Joan Donald on May 17th, 2017 6:29 AM

Sincere condolences to Marcia and family members and friends on Muriel’s passing. I have thought of little else since getting the sad news. A flood of memories have been uppermost in my mind from the memorable day of the National Meeting in Manitoba where the committee was given the task of formalizing our group to the many other projects that we shared through the years. During the early days as we sat around Gloria’s dining room table where Muriel, Gloria and I developed the first edition of Standards for Operating Room Nursing Practice, we became close friends and loyal members of ORNAC. Fond memories remain of our World Conference in Adelaide, Australia where Muriel and Marcia spent social times with us as well as during many International and National Conferences. So many special memories that I will cherish forever. May you Rest In Peace my beloved Muriel.

A dedicated health care professional, but even more importantly, an incredible person. Muriel had more energy than anyone I have ever met. Kind, caring, honest, and always willing to help others. And a wonderful sense of humour! We will miss you greatly. Sincere condolences to Muriel’s family, and may your memories of her help you during this difficult time.

I am unable to attend the funeral, but just wish to express my sorrow at hearing of Muriel’s death. She was kind to me when I worked as Transplant Coordinator at the Lions Eye Bank and she was the hospital liaison on the Board of Directors. I know her work was tough at times and the responsibilities there were numerous. But she had my back through some difficult times and did what she could to support me. She was a woman of great depth of understanding, strong character and morals. My sympathies to her family.

Muriel will be very missed. I have enjoyed all of my associations with her over the years from her first days in 1988 at the FHH to our work together at the HRC and in England where she helped me with contract work with the NHS. She has impacted the lives of so many and made a difference in all she did. A non nonsense colleague, always with the best interest of the patient but kind and giving to the many that she trained in best practice whether in the OR, processing, management or HR. She will be very missed. She was a down to earth old school mentor with lots of savy. My condolences to the family. She told me lots of fond memories of children and her life before Calgary. Quite a woman, mother, colleague and friend. We will miss her.

Sincere condolences on losing a very special person. Muriel was one of the first people I met when I came to Calgary 24 years ago and she had a tremendous impact on my career and development as a surgeon. She was always available and happy to provide practical and wise advice and I was lucky to be able to call her my friend. We shared so many stories and laughs together and I’m going to miss her very much.

Condolence from Colin DeCecco on May 17th, 2017 11:25 AM

The support and encouragement she gave me as a Coordinator of the HOPE Program will never be forgotten, nor her sense of humor. To me she was a true mentor and with her loss, the absolute end of an era in Nursing. A great lady who selflessly gave to her job and her family. My only regret with Muriel is I never got to have that drink and cigar with her, I will when my time come I hope.
My best thoughts and wishes for her family and friends.

Condolence from ORNAC – AIISOC on May 19th, 2017 8:11 AM

We cherish the time spent with Muriel during our recent conference in Niagara Falls. For all of us who spoke to Muriel, thanked her and hugged her, we will hold those memories in our hearts forever. Thank you Muriel for what you brought to the nursing community, to ORNAC and to every student who learned under you. Muriel was an original team member of the first ORNAC Standards document and she chaired our first official ORNAC Conference in Jasper, Alberta and also the subsequent conference in Banff. She truly fostered the ORNAC vision; the leader in perioperative practice & patient safety through a strong, unified national association that enhances and advances the practice of perioperative Registered Nurses & Associates.

Until we meet again.

ORNAC Executive, Board and Members

This is so sad. It was heart breaking to learn of Muriel’s death. She was a valued member of our January 1962 graduating nursing class ( January 1962).

Condolence from Gloria Stephens on May 21st, 2017 2:16 PM

My dearest Pal, we just shared a wonderful week together, the three of us , having done it so many years in the past but this last conference will always remain so special to me for reasons which are deep in my heart. We have shared so many of life’s ups and downs together, cried, laughed and bolstered each one up when down. The ‘dining room table’ will always have a spot for you with the memories of our years of struggle with the ORNAC Standards and all our social times. It seems so appropriate that we shared the podium at the National. Sorry Muriel that I was unable to attend your Memorial as I was sent to hospital, but you can count on me to always support Marcia in any way that I can, for ever. You are ‘THE OR NURSE OF CANADA’ God bless you and your family. We’ll meet again , my Pal . Love Gloria

My condolences to Muriel’s family. I had the privilege to work with Muriel on the board of directors of the Lions Eye Bank. Her caring combined with a wide ranging knowledge of health care provided our volunteer organization with a much appreciated professional voice. Muriel made a difference in all that she did and her leadership leaves a legacy of caring. She will be missed.

Condolence from Cindy Laukkanen on May 26th, 2017 10:56 AM

Muriel was so good to me and my son. She was my first Director of Nursing. She showed me how to be a leader, she put me under her wing and raised me up to be the best I could be. She always made me feel loved and appreciated. She picked me up when I was a little bit broken and applauded every success I ever had. I will never forget her unwavering support, her wisdom and humour, and how any operating room problem could be resolved over breakfast at Ricky’s in Cochrane on a Saturday morning. Ricky’s was also where Muriel taught my 8 year old to swear. 🙂 They were both pretty good at it and would laugh hysterically at each other! She had unwavering spirit and loyalty. I will forever honour and remember her. My deepest heartfelt sympathy to all her family.

Condolence from Anne Hughes on December 13th, 2017 10:32 AM

Just found out about Muriel and am so sorry. I fondly remember the many times our paths crossed over the years. I first met her in Edmonton in 1973 where I did my PG course, then at various OR conferences. I can still see Muriel sitting on Gloria’s deck one evening in 2006 wearing her knitted slippers; what a wonderful ORNAC weekend reunion that was, as I’m sure you and Michael will remember. Muriel finally made it to Newfoundland for an ORNAC conference and on a subsequent trip, I was pleased to host her for supper. I always looked forward to hearing about her latest “job” and we had many laughs over the years. She will be sorely missed.
My deepest condolences.
Anne Hughes, St. John’s, NL
