SHERSTABETOFF, Joey Lee

August 31, 1979 – Calgary, Alberta
October 9, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness and broken hearts we announce the passing of Joey Lee Sherstabetoff on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 39 years.

Joey was born and raised in Calgary, AB. In his younger years, Scouts taught him to grow and explore his natural curiosities.  He graduated from Crescent Heights High School and went on to complete a degree from the University of Calgary in Civil Engineering. In 2001, he interned and later worked for AMEC now known as Wood.  He was recently recognized and appreciated for fifteen years of dedicated service to the company. Joey was a kid at heart to many of those that loved and knew him. His eyes would light up if you simply mentioned Legos, trains, scooters and beef dips – how he loved his gluten free, dairy free, egg free food. He adored spending time with his family and friends and on weekends, Paula and Joey loved to go “tootling” as they called it by simply being out and about in the city taking in what it had to offer, such as trying a new restaurant, seeing a show, or calling up a friend. Joey loved learning and tried to seek out new experiences through traveling and his hobbies, such as curling, getting good deals at Canadian Tires and Home Depot for his house projects, golfing, and spending time with people. Joey was a good listener and an active conversationalist. He was always genuinely interested in knowing how people were and what they were up to in their respective lives. When he asked the question “how are you?”, the answer always mattered. Joey put his heart and soul into any project he was working on, be it at home or at work.  His attention to detail was phenomenal and paramount – a true gift to all. Joey was a kind, thoughtful, compassionate man. The well-being of others was always of utmost importance for him right to the very end of his life. He showed utter strength, bravery and conviction in fighting this year-long battle with colon cancer. Joey will be greatly missed and will be forever loved.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Paula Alves; his parents, Joseph and Murielle Sherstabetoff; as well as his half siblings, Shelley Heisler, Brian Thompson and Geraldine Jepson.  He is also survived by his in-laws, Porfirio and Isilda Alves, Susana Alves and Michael Moore; as well as numerous relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Joey’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Joey Sherstabetoff, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E., Calgary, AB T2Z 4E6, Telephone: 403-203-0525.

  9. Stephen Andrews :

    Dear Paula,

I must admit I never really got a chance to know Joey on a deeply personal level outside of work. However, I was fortunate to work with him for a couple years that helped put me on a much brighter path to where I stand today. It was thanks to his advice and guidance that I was able to develop into the professional I am today and I will be forever thankful for that opportunity.

“The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there’s little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides.”
    ― Carl Sagan

    Sincerely,

    Stephen Andrews

Joey was one of best Professional Engineers I’ve worked with.
During the course of one project, he shown me the best brunches in Calgary, and it was when he told me about his childhood, happy marriage, and beloved family.
Through those talks I had the opportunity to see an extraordinary human being, who was always concerned about others, not about himself.
Life has mysteries that sometimes are hard to accept, and for sure Joey’s too early departure is one of those.
But I prefer to think that God always chooses the most beautiful flowers to His garden.

  16. Hey Paula,

I’m so thankful for having Joey as my unofficial supervisor. He was always able to push me to become a better person. As I’m someone who doesn’t talk much, Joey was one of the few in my life that can get me to open up. He was always curious about my life, asking me how my weekends were. It was almost as if he was poking me with questions. At first, I thought he was doing it just for the sake of conversation but it didn’t take long for me to realize he was genuinely interested in knowing my life. And I only knew that because he would remember every word I said from our previous conversations.

I had the pleasure of hearing some of his stories as well. He talked about how he was looking forward to renovating your parents’ home in Kelowna. Often we talked about food ’cause he knew I was passionate about it. He liked Nando’s a lot although Calgary doesn’t have too many Portuguese restaurants. Every third sentence, he would mention your name possibly because he knew both of us loved baking. He even mentioned what he wore on your first date with him, which I’m still laughing thinking about it.

Joey taught me the importance of remembering the details but he never told me that. Not just in the world of engineering, but socially as well. Although he departed too soon, his impact on others like myself will last a lifetime as I hope to do the same for others I come across.

Paula, Joe, Murielle, and all of Joey’s many friends:
In 1997, I met my friend Norman Poon’s high school friends and one always remembered me… I learned so much about Civil Engineering and roads that I quote all the time from Joey. I never say the word Jersey Barrier without thinking of him or cross the Flanders overpass over Crowchild and think signalling problem that they gave him to figure out as a Civil Engineering student. Or I always smile when thinking of having his mom Murielle put his bowling shoes in the car so I could surprise him with McDonald’s, Fondue, and Bowling in Banff. His friends’ were dear to him and he cultivated them and was so loyal. I am grateful that he was in my life and I am so glad that he found the love of his life. And was faithful to beef dips until the end. Rest in Peace Chief.

    Memories of Joey:
at 14 years – walking our dog Misty because she was a “chick magnet”
at 15 years – We hired him to look after our house while we were away on holidays. Even the neighbours commented on how diligent has was – coming over every day and watering, cutting the grass etc.
at 37 years – Curling with the Sizelands at the mens’ bonspiel in Banff. He was so easy going, so pleasant, so thoughtful.
at 39 years – at his birthday party. He was so overwhelmed, so grateful to everyone who came, so gracious, calm and accepting. He made everyone else feel comfortable at such a difficult time.

So sad, too soon, not fair
Condolences to Murielle, Joe and Paula. Joey was truly a kind and thoughtful person, taken too soon. We can’t imagine the depth of your grief.

  30. Dear Paula
With great sadness I wish you heart felt condolences for Joey’s passing. It’s also with great Joy to know that Joey did not fight this battle alone. Your strength and love made his struggle more bearable. Joey and I had many discussions over coffee and lunch, most was about work, however we always made time to discuss family. Family was important to Joey and he had no problem talking or listening. Our paths first crossed through work, but eventually turned into a friendship based on honesty and trust. Joey’s friendship means a lot to me and I cherish the memories we made in the few short years we knew each other. I will continue to pray for you, your family and Joey’s family. I pray that the strength Joey found in his family will give all of you the strength you need during your time of grief.
