August 19, 1926 – June 19, 2015

Arthur (Art) Howard Shepard passed away peacefully at home on Friday June 19th, 2015. Predeceased by his beloved wife Alice, he is lovingly remembered by his children Colleen (David) and Russ (Irena), and his six grandchildren Christopher, Stephen, David (Alexandra), Glenn (Gianna), Alex and Anna, as well as his brother Roy.

Art was born on the family homestead in Iola, Alberta. His childhood years were spent growing up in Camrose and Edmonton where he met and married Alice in 1952, moving to Calgary in 1962 to open the ERCB’s Core Research Center. During his time there as Administrator he developed the world’s largest most complete core repository and upon retirement Art turned to consulting to share his expertise around the world. Whether working in some far away country, building family cabins, creating beautiful stained glass work or caring for his family he was never far from his cup of coffee! As Art’s health declined he was able to remain at home with his little Pomeranian dog Cactus thanks to the care and support of many individuals. Our family is very grateful for all of the wonderful caregivers and doctors who have cared for Art over the years.

Funeral Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church (3527 Boulton Road N.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Daranne Harris Presiding. A visitation will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY(Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Friday, June 26, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Condolence from Chandra on June 21st, 2015 1:21 PM

I was a caregiver of Alice through part of her illness, and I never forgot how devoted Art was to her. I’m sorry to hear about his passing, though I believe they are together again. My condolences to their families at this time of loss.

Condolence from LOUISE SCHOEPP (nee MANDSETH) on June 22nd, 2015 6:51 AM

Dear Russ and Colleen and Families,

It saddens me to know that another leaf has fallen from our Family Tree. Because of the 18 year difference in our ages, I always called him Uncle Art,my handsome, loving older cousin. My mother (Shirley Shepard-Mandseth) & Uncle Russell were such a close and devoted brother and sister. I fly to BC today, so I cannot be at the farewell service for Art. Please know that my thoughts & prayers will be with all of you. I know the sad voyage with an Alzheimer parent all too well, as we lost Mom to complications of this cruel disease in 2006 the last of a generation. Please accept my deepest condolences. I would so welcome contact with any of you. God Bless, always.

I got to know Mr. Shepard in the early 1970’s (in those days it was always Mr. Shepard) when I did my thesis research in the old Core Research Center. I was so pleased a few years later when he asked my opinion on table and lighting design as the new Core Research Center was being developed. Of course, I am sure he asked many. In more recent times I would occasionally run into Art at the hardware or grocery store and we would enjoy a pleasant chat. Art was a delightful gentleman and I shall miss him.

We are so saddened to learn of Art’s passing. We have been neighbours of Art and Alice for some 20 years and will remember not only Art but Alice with such fond memories of their kindness and good humour, their love for each other. We should mention also the love of their garden. We remember talking over the fence with Art a few years back and he asked about the two statuettes in our back yard – he asked if we had names for them. Our response was Art and Alice. We will forever look on those statuettes and have peace in knowing Art and Alice are now together again. Our sincerest condolences to all of the family.
