SHADDICK, Katherine

August 25, 1953 – September 19, 2016

Katherine Shaddick died on Monday September 19, 2016 at the age of 63 years. Katherine was born in High River, Alberta to Barbara and Tony Lee. She was the eldest of two girls, which made her the wisest and she never let her younger sister, Caroline forget that fact. Katherine spent her early years living in Pincher Creek and Calgary. In 1962 the family moved to Lagos, Nigeria for four years, then to Houston, Texas before returning to Calgary when Katherine was ready to start high school. Family holidays were spent exploring the world and by the time Katherine was 15 she had travelled extensively throughout Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and the UK. Her favorite place was Barbados, where Barbara had grown up and a place to which the family travelled frequently to visit grandparents, family and friends. Many hours of her youth were spent swimming in the blue waters of the Caribbean, hunting for sea shells on its sandy beaches or hanging out under the coconut trees with her cousins. Katherine never lost her love for travel and was always ready to participate in any adventure no matter how big or small. The voyage was as important as the destination and nothing could undermine her enjoyment when she was out and about in the world.

After high school, Katherine remained in Calgary and worked at the Providence Creche, Advanced Industries, Calgary Co-op and Heritage Park. She met Steven Shaddick at work in 1980. They were married on mid-summer‘s eve in June 1986 and celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in 2016. She embraced Steven’s family and they her. She took pride in having 3 new brothers, Chris, John and Martin Shaddick. Katherine loved being married. She and Steven were a unique couple who rarely did anything apart. Together they looked after each other and made it work. After they moved into their own home they became avid gardeners with both of them doing the planning, Steven doing the planting and harvesting and Katherine, consistent with her generous nature giving the bulk of the produce from Steven’s labour away to family and friends.

Katherine was a brave and determined person. She resolutely insisted on living her life on her terms no matter what obstacles were placed in front of her including the gradual loss of her ability to walk, the loss of her physical independence and her cancer diagnosis in 2013. Throughout she was kind, generous and loving to everyone. As her health declined she was supported by Steven, her family, many wonderful old and new friends, the Calgary Society for Persons with Disabilities and through the Society, a very special person, Ronnaley Cayenne who made it possible for Katherine to do what she loved notwithstanding her health and physical dependence on others.

Katherine is survived by Steven and his family including Katherine’s mother-in-law, Lydia (Gerry), father-in-law, Dan (Helen), brothers-in-law John (Grace) and Martin (Jackie) Shaddick, her sister Caroline and Ian Main. Katherine was predeceased by her parents and brother in law Chris Shaddick.

We will love her and miss her always.
