SEMBO, Jack

December 9, 1923 – Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
January 25, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Jack Sembo, beloved husband of Patricia Sembo, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2019 at the age of 95 years.

He showed great courage, determination and a sense of humour under difficult circumstances in recent months. Jack was proud to say he was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He grew up during some of Canada’s most difficult times, the “dirty thirties”, and then World War Two. Those times left an indelible mark upon Jack, as he valued being able to care for his family thanks to steady employment and his own hard work. He served his country in the service of the Royal Canadian Air Force from August 1943 to January 1945. After the war, Jack began his business career with Henderson Insurance as an accounting clerk. He moved on to British American Oil (BA) in 1946 and married Pat in 1947. Over the subsequent thirty seven years, Jack worked for BA and its successor Company, Gulf Oil Canada, in Moose Jaw, Toronto, Montreal and Calgary.

Jack was a loving father and “Papa” and is survived by his wife of seventy one years, Pat Sembo; his daughter Heather Bakken and sons Bill Sembo (Toshimi) and Brian Sembo (Frances); his ten grandchildren, Sundi Clark, Lindsay Läntelä (Jukka), Adam Bakken, Aaron Bakken, Mariko McInnis (Joel), Chelsea Sangster (Ryan), Shannon Sembo (Joel), Toshiro Sembo, Takeshi Sembo, and Brennan Sembo (Krista); and his six great-grandchildren, Laana Läntelä, Kaija Läntelä, Kael Hoffman, Kohen Hoffman, Kesslyn Hoffman and Brielle Sangster; his brother, Vic Sinkoski (Janet) and sister-in-law, Ruth Knowles, along with numerous nieces, nephews and good friends including Dr. Jer Cox.

Jack’s family will celebrate his life privately at a later date.

The family wishes to thank Dr. James Powell, Dr. Gregory Samis, Dr. Simon Colgan, the teams of nurses and staff at the Carewest Sarcee Hospice and the Peter Lougheed Hospital Unit 58. Jack was very appreciative of and grateful to those who cared for him.

In loving memory of Jack, a family gift will be made to the Calgary Health Trust. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Jack’s memory may be made directly to the Calgary Health Trust Suite 800, 11012 Macleod Trail S.E., Calgary, AB T2J 6A5, www.thetrust.ca . Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Jack Sembo, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
