April 2, 1938 – Rouleau, Saskatchewan
August 23, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with sadness we announce the passing of Beverley Jean Sears (nee Smith) at age 81 on August 23, 2019. Bev was a cherished mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and a good friend to many.
Bev had many interests that turned into passions that turned into accomplishments. In the 70’s, she was the first woman working in Calgary’s original television studio (CFCN) as a sound technician. Later she obtained her realtor license and was one of very few women specializing in commercial properties. Bev was an honour-roll graduate from Mount Royal College’s Public Relations program. She successfully partnered with other women to start several businesses. Bev founded one of Calgary’s first convention and event planning companies. Bev also enjoyed curling, a good game of golf at the Earl Grey, and catching up with her Calgary Oil Wives friends.
Bev loved horses and discovered her love of harness racing in the 80’s. Bev was an owner breeder and a founding member of the Performance Standardbred Association. She was an active member of the Alberta Standardbred Horse Association. Bev was so highly regarded a Bev Sears Stake Race was named in her honour. For over 30 years, she was a devoted volunteer with the Calgary Stampede.
Our mother loved to fill her beautiful home on the hill with her family, neighbors, friends, music, laughter, and family pets. Everyone was welcome. A visit with Bev always included a cup of coffee and her home cooking. It was Bev’s wit, intelligence, and advice delivered with a velvet hammer, that kept us all coming back for more. Bev had the gift of making everybody feel like a somebody.
Bev will be deeply missed by her daughters and sons-in law; Laurie and Jim, Cathy and Fraser, and Boo and Martyn. She was truly the best “Grams” to her grandchildren, Grady, Parker, Liam, Natalie, Noel (Nicole), and Avalon, and will live forever in their hearts. Bev loved her friends, but none as much as her best friend and late husband, George, who passed in 2016.
We invite friends to join us as we celebrate this life well-lived with one last cup of coffee and light lunch at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 29, 2019 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
