SCOTT, Jean “Roma”

October 3, 1936 – Leeds, United Kingdom
July 26, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Jean “Roma” Scott, beloved wife of Neville, mother of Catherine (Reto) and grandmother of Mike and Emma, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. in Calgary at the age of 81years.

Roma was born in Leeds, UK where she and Neville first set eyes on one another at high school, eventually dating in 1955. Married in 1959, Roma and Neville immigrated to Canada in 1961 and over the years lived in Toronto, St. Catharines, Windsor, Burlington, Montreal, Edmonton and finishing up in Calgary in 1993.

Roma’s greatest day was the day she held our daughter Catherine for the first time in Windsor, both Roma’s and Neville’s lives changing for the better. Roma was so proud of her daughter Catherine, and her grandchildren, Mike and Emma, and supported them in everything they did, including school and sports.

Roma had two other major loves: one was crafts and the other animals. All her life she was the champion of all animals, she even made the National Newspaper in the UK when at 10 years old she found an abandoned one day old kitten and nursed it to life using a tiny feeding tube. Every dog in our neighborhood, and even the dogs at Calgary Airport Border Services, knew of Roma the “Cookie Lady”. She carried dog cookies everywhere she went and found it a constant joy to see dogs passing the house on a walk refusing to walk past their house until they got their cookie. At the airport they even let her feed the Detector dogs cookies!

Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

At Roma’s request, please wear something colourful and happy, full black dress is not required.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Matthew Ginzer, the staff at the Swan Evergreen Village, and all the friends and family who have supported them and shown them such tremendous love through this difficult time.

In living memory of Roma Scott, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  1. Carol Cunning :

Nev and family. So sad to hear of Roma’s passing. She was a great friend over the past 27 years. She always enjoyed a good chuckle. As part of our craft group she shared many original ideas over the years. Although I know the past year has been a difficult one with her deteriorating health issues it is hard to believe she’s gone. She will be missed. Hugs to the whole family. Brian and Carol

  2. Roma has been a wonderful neighbour for these past twenty-six years. Always kind and helpful, she was the ambassador to the neighbourhood for the Scott household, and we often visited either over the back fence or as we stood on our driveways. Roma was unfailingly positive and cheerful, and my last visit with her in April was no different. She had a great sense of humour and a hearty laugh, and always took the time to visit every time we saw one another as she was either leaving or returning home. Above all, she was devoted to Neville and his care for these past twenty-two years, accompanying him to his many medical appointments, and faithfully devoting many hours each day he spent in hospital. No one could have wished for a more devoted and caring partner in life than Roma, and I could not have wished for a better neighbour. Roma will be very much missed. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

  6. Maureen Leonhardt :

The picture you have chosen for this obituary is exactly the Roma I remember, cheerful and welcoming. We often met at the mailboxes, and used that time to catch up on what was happening in our lives. The label “Cookie Lady” is certainly true as Rusty and Whiskey would know even before she arrived, tails wagging whilst peering through the garden gate, waiting for their treats. She will be missed.

  7. Carole Jones :

Ken and I were so sorry to hear of the passing of Roma, I will really miss our little chats and our coffee mornings at Timmy’s. She was a dear friend of many years and loved our dogs as much as we do. They would shatter the neighbourhood with their barking and howling if she was in the driveway when we passed by and we always had to go over for a cookie. She even left cookies in the mailbox in case she wasn’t home to give them a treat.
Rest in peace Roma, we will always remember and miss you, you were such a good friend.

Neville, Catherine, Mike and Emma, my deepest condolences on the loss of your deeply loved Roma. I remember her lively personality and sense of humour, and her love of your sheep dogs, way back when, in Burlington.

  10. Leonard Scott :

I have known Roma for roughly 66 years as she was in the year above me at school. When my brother Nev started going out with her I got to know her better and always loved her sense of humour and her laugh. I spent six months in hospital when I was 18 and she came to visit with Nev and occasionally my other brother Don. Always a laugh she was a demon card player and we could never beat her at Rummy or any other such game. We will all miss her.

  11. Roma was so utterly devoted to her family. Utterly. She was a hip mum and grandma, so dialed-in to the younger generation, and always a happy fixture on the school field when she came to pick the kids up when they were little. She will be sorely missed.

Roma’s dry British wit was aimed democratically at others, but also at herself, and I am so grateful for the many laughs we shared. What a gift to bring so much laughter into this world; Roma had it in spades. Her humor even made it into some of her legendary crafts.

Catherine, Neville, Reto, Emma and Mike, I am so very sorry for your loss. But know this: she loved you fiercely and wholeheartedly. And it won’t be long before you can’t help yourself smiling when you think of her. What a truly special lady. We were so lucky to have her in our lives.

  12. Jackie & Terry Keenan :

Terry and I were introduced to Roma and Nev whilst visiting my sister Carole, and her husband Ken during our visits from the UK to Canada. Roma would always make a point of inviting us to her home to enjoy one of her delicious meals. She was a warm and friendly person and we were always made to feel very welcome. Her passing will leave a large void in many people’s lives and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family and friends. Rest in peace Roma, let the angels watch over you.
