SCOTT, Hubert (Hugh) Sherriff

October 19, 1927 – Calgary, Alberta
February 13, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father Hubert Sherriff Scott of Calgary on February 13, 2018 at the age of 90 years.

Hubert (Hugh) was born in Calgary to the late Jacob Hubert and Ella (Watson, nee Smail) Scott. He was known for his cheerful disposition and generosity, and was never idle – always engaged in something creative. He met “His Sweetheart” as he was fond of calling Josie, in Warburg, AB, and they married on October 10, 1953. After briefly working in Robsart, SK, and as CPR station agent in Gadsby, AB, Hugh was sent to serve in the same capacity in Lake Louise, arriving with his wife and first three children in August of 1956. He remained as agent at Lake Louise until 1968, and was the last official station agent to hold that position. During their years in Lake Louise, Hugh and Josie added two more children to their family, and saw such changes as the arrival of power, television, telephone and the completion of the TransCanada Highway. It was in the beautiful heart of the Canadian Rockies that Hugh found inspiration for his screen printing and artistic design hobbies. He created pennants, plaques, book ends, and other souvenirs that immortalized and promoted the natural beauty of Lake Louise. An avid skier, curler, and outdoorsman, he instilled his love of nature into his children. In 1968, the family moved to Red Deer as Hugh was promoted to the position of Mobile Supervisor for the CPR. His final transfer was to Calgary, where he and Josie retired in 1986. Together they enjoyed travelling in their Barth motorhome, and Hugh turned his creative talents toward gardening. He was particularly proud of his success in apple tree grafting. Hugh read extensively and excelled at family movie making, leaving a legacy of stories in motion for his children and grandchildren to enjoy. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 85.

Hugh will be lovingly remembered by his wife of sixty-four years, Josephine; his children, Brenda (Terry) of Red Deer, AB; David (Janie), Kathy (Howard) and John (Yvonne) of Calgary, AB; son-in-law Ron of Penhold, AB; grandchildren, Carlyn, Kayla, Rebecca, Caleb, Mitch, Reed, Parker, Rylie, Kristen, Megan and Jessica; and five great-grandchildren; his brother John Watson, and many nieces and nephews. Hubert was predeceased by his daughter Linda Slaymaker; parents Jacob and Ella; stepfather Ellis Watson; and his sister Emily Byers.

The family would like to thank the staff of Foothills Medical Centre and South Health Campus, and the wonderful and compassionate caregivers of Auburn Heights Retirement Residence for making his last few years as comfortable and home-like as possible. Their contribution to keeping our parents together in their final years will always be remembered and appreciated.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of McInnis & Holloway, Park Memorial Funeral Home. Inurnment in the Memorial Gardens and a memorial service will occur at a later date. In living memory of Hubert Scott, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, https://netdonor.net/ea-action/action?ea.campaign.id=53552&ea.client.id=1996.
