SCHULLI, George Richard

June 22, 1928 – Grand Forks, British Columbia
July 3, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

After a long and well lived life of 91 years, Richard “Dick” passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 3, 2019.

Growing up in Kimberley, BC, he moved to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia and later articled to become a Chartered Accountant. Dick moved his family to Calgary in 1966 where he lived in the same community until the time of his death. Over his decades-long career in Calgary, Dick was a partner at Ernst & Ernst (1966 – 1980), a sole practitioner (1980 – 1985), in partnership with his son Rick (1985 – 1991) and retired in 1993 as a partner at Ernst & Young (1991 – 1993). He was very active in his profession and held various governing positions with the Alberta Institute of Chartered Accountants during the 1980’s. He received his FCA in 1986. Dick was very involved in his church. In the early years of his retirement he spent many years as church treasurer. Keeping active until the end he enjoyed playing bridge, potluck lunches and occasionally assisted with some church administrative tasks. Remembered most for being passionate about his work, Dick was also generous and extremely dedicated to his family, as demonstrated by tirelessly serving as the primary caregiver to his late wife, Raye, up until the last few months of her life.

Dick is survived by his sister Louise, son David (Pauline Turnbull), and grandchildren, Peter and Leah. He was predeceased by his wife Raye in 2018, son Rick in 2011 and his brother Charles in 2013.

A service will be held at Christ Church, Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. A Reception will follow in the Crump Room. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date at the family plot at Queen’s Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a local charity of your choice. Condolence Messages

  1. I would like to send my condolences to Dave, Peter and Leah. Unfortunately I will be out of the country for Dick’s service.
I have so many memories of Dick having grown up just three doors down from the Schulli clan. In particular, I remember that Dick made the best cookies I’ve ever tasted and his salmon sandwiches were to die for. I also fondly remember our weekend ski trips to Sunshine and Lake Louise, which were always meticulously organized by Dick. When Dick and Rick formed their accounting partnership, I used their services primarily, as they were certainly the best in their profession. Dick always offered sound advice and reassured me that the world was not a “dog eat dog place”. A strict exercise regimen was always important to Dick and I’ll truly miss him when I’m working out in the fitness room at the Glencoe. Memories of my chats with him will be with me always.
