SCHMIRLER, Annette Lois

July 7, 1964 – Revelstoke, British Columbia
October 14, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

Annette beloved wife of Brad Schmirler of Calgary, AB, passed away on October 14, 2016 at the age of 52 years.

Annette was born July 7, 1964 in Revelstoke, BC. She grew up in Golden, BC where she met Brad, her soul mate. They moved to Calgary in 1982 and got married in 1986. Their firstborn, daughter Alex, arrived in January, 1989 and then later their son, Stu, in November, 1990.

First and foremost, Annette was a mom. She blended that with a variety of jobs usually centered in educational settings where she could work with children. For the past ten years she managed the Brew & Blendz coffee shop in the Kinesiology Department at the University of Calgary. She truly loved the relationships that she made with students and faculty on a daily basis.

Annette was the best mom, wife, friend, sister and daughter. Annette’s biggest passions were pleasing and taking care of everyone! As to be expected, her favorite holiday was Christmas; she loved the spirit of giving. She adored animals and Casey, Pugsley and Tango were no exception. Annette loved music; it seemed as though every song was “her favourite”.

Annette is survived by her husband Brad, children Alexandra and Stuart Schmirler; parents Len and Lois Ohlhausen, sisters Jaleen Deanna (Ohlhausen) and Corinne Labas (Ohlhausen) and their families.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Calgary Humane Society, 4455 110th AVE SE, Calgary, Alberta T2C 2T7. Phone 403-205-4455, Charitable Registration #11882 3632 RR0001 www.calgaryhumane.ca

In living memory of Annette Schmirler, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: 403-241-0044.

  2. I offer my condolences over the loss of Annette. I was a student at the University of Calgary and was always so inspired by Annette’s kind spirit (not to mention her impressive ability to remember everyone’s name!). It was always so nice to be greeted by such a warm and friendly face in an environment where it was often difficult to find positivity. She was a beloved celebrity of the University Campus, and she will be missed.

My sincere condolences to the family from a fellow former Goldenite and high school colleague on the loss of a beloved family member . What I will remember most about Annette is her smile and her bright, sunny disposition that lit up a room. We recently renewed acquaintances via FB and it became readily evident that she was a Huge animal lover in addition to a people lover. May your family rest in the knowledge that she added light and love to the lives of others simply by just being ‘Annette’ – -a ray of sunshine. I know that many will miss her enormously. May you take comfort knowing how beloved she was and the special brand of joy she brought to others.

    Dear Brad, Alex and Stu,
Our deepest sympathy to all of you at this very difficult time. We always loved your mom’s energy, enthusiasm and zest for life! I also enjoyed hearing about what each of you was up to when I’d stop for coffee at Brew’s and Blendz when my office was at U of C a few years ago. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Lindsey sends her love and a big hug to you Alex.
Blessings and love, Guy, Joyce and family.

  8. I was saddened and shocked to hear of Annette’s passing. I worked with her at both Symons Valley Elementary and H.D. Cartwright Junior High. She was one of the most kindhearted fellow employees I ever worked with…and the kids all loved her, too. I remember how she spoke so proudly of her own kids. This world would be a better place if more people were like Annette. May happy memories bring you some measure of comfort in this difficult time.

  10. Annette is one of the most memorable people I met during my time at the University of Calgary. Starting in my first year, my roommate Braeden and I spent anywhere from one to five hours a day sitting in Barons Court and hanging out. Everyday we would see Annette, have a great conversation, and see how her smile always lit up the day of hundreds of students. She had a magnetic personality and was an absolutely amazing person. Everyone who lived in Residence and visited brew and blendz knew Annette because she made the effort to connect with every single student she interacted with. Whether it was as simple as remembering your name and program or as in depth as knowing what your goals were and where you were from. I can’t even count the number of amazing memories I have sitting at the tables beside Brew and Blendz throughout University and can attribute many of those memories to Annette.

I had even more love for Annette because she grew up in the same small town as I did. Connecting with Annette was one of the easiest things to do as she was so kind and warm to everyone she interacted with. I only wish that more students had to get the opportunity to get to know her because I know that everyone who I hung out with in University remembers Annette fondly. My thoughts are with her family and loved ones as they go through what must be a difficult time.

You never forget your childhood friends. We were a large crew from the Big Eddy in Revelstoke and realize that not all kids had what we had to grow up in. It was safe, fun, and all the parents looked out for all the kids. And yes, we did get spankings from other parents and our own. Growing up with Annette was a blessing. She was so funny, smart and could always laugh at herself because she was a bit of a klutz. She always seems to get hurt the strangest way, I loved her! Leonard, Lois, you raised an amazing woman, mother, sister and friend! She will forever be in my heart. Brad, Alex and Stu, she was your glue, she was so amazed that you were hers. I am so sorry for your loss. Jayleen and Corrine, she loved being your big sister, the protector, she was so proud you two and your families! Hugs to all and I raise my glass to you, Annette, so glad we had our time together! You will be one of the best angels in heaven! XOXO

  17. Dear Annette…You didn’t really didn’t know my name during our time within the U of C’s Kinesiology Faculty – but I know you and watched, with an amazing sense of your daily positive energy, passion and love that was was equally distributed daily to all of your customers, especially the students. Your honest caring for all who had the opportunity to be a part of your life, some everyday, it gave great hope to all in seeing what life can be in caring for people, especially like me who had the great fortune to watch such a caring lighthouse operate in providing meaning to our daily lives. You were amazing beyond any description Annette. You will be missed by all of us who had even a minute of your time in engaging and suggesting that our time on this planet was well worth the connection between us. You were blessed Annette and you blessed us with your presence. So lucky were we who had those small moments of meeting and seeing your life force so enthusiastically and genuinely engaging everyone to be better. Although your time with us was much too short, you have left all of us who had even one moment with you a memory to last a lifetime – as it will be for me. RIP ALS – tearful thanks for a life well lived.

She always made me feel so welcome and no matter how stressed out I was by my course load going to Brews and Blends always made me feel better. I was always impressed by Annette ability to remember everyones name and usual order. No matter how stressed out I was about exams, papers and midterms I always ended up with a smile on my face after meeting Annette. Her happy nature and charm was infectious. Annette was vibrant. When I met her, she was teaching exercise classes at Huntington Hills and being a new mom and new to Calgary, it seemed like a natural fit. She was bubbly, energetic and fun! From there our meetings were through the softball club she played in, parties and other family events. As time passed and lives changed, no one kept in touch, and life went on, but we’d hear of her through other friends, and then one day, I bumped into her at the coffee shop…in fact, I heard her first, before I saw her…because she had such an infectious laugh!! I couldn’t help but smile knowing who it was! There is no doubt in my mind, she is already making people smile in Heaven…albeit much too soon for us. May her memory and spirit live on forever. J
