SAUL, Berna Marie

March 25, 1958 – Perth, Ontario
November 15, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

In the early hours of November 15, 2017, Berna Saul passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Berna will join her daughter Stephanie who passed away in 2010. She is survived by her loving husband of thirty six years, Dave; her cherished sons Mike and Andrew; as well as her two sisters Beth (Rick) and Bonnie. She was predeceased by her parents, Barry and Bernice Mulville; mother-in-law, Lois and brother-in-law Pat. Berna is survived by her father-in-law Don; brothers-in-law Brian (Laurie) and Murray (Jennifer) and many nieces and nephews.

Berna had a happy childhood in her hometown of Perth, Ontario, graduating in accounting from St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario. She moved to Calgary in 1980 to join her husband and pursue a career in accounting in the oil industry. Her passions included spending time with family and her hobby as a handywoman. She constructed an elaborate shed and dock at our cabin from scratch and completed numerous other projects around the house.

She retired in 1995 to become a full-time mom to her three children. There were always frequent trips to Tim Horton’s after school. She made many trips with family to Disney Land, Nuevo Vallarta, Hawaii and the cabin in Montana, often spending entire summers there with the kids.

Berna took pride in her children’s academic and career achievements but especially with their development as good human beings. Her humor was contagious, she would make friends with anyone she came in contact with, and could hold a conversation that would bring a smile to their face.

Berna was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2009 and has battled courageously and continuously, living in the moment until the end. She maintained her sense of humor even in her final moments when she would raise her arm and dance a bit when we played a tune she liked.

If Berna was guilty of anything, it was making her struggle with cancer seem effortless. She always made sure that she looked her best, no matter how she felt. Her motto was “this too shall pass” and she lived her life by encouraging herself and others to keep moving forward.

Cremation has taken place and a Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

To the Saul and Mulville family,
Berna has left us many memories, most of which bring a smile or chuckle. She had a way bringing levity even in serious moments. I know that our paths did not cross often in the later part of her life but we have many childhood memories in Perth and college life experiences in Kingston.
    Rest well Berna!

  7. Linda (Tarle) Wolfe

My heart shares the sorrow of Berna’s families at her loss. I remember the day she was born, happy to have another girl cousin to balance five brothers in my family. We lived our early lives only a block apart and shared every Christmas Day, until she married and moved west. Berna was a kind and intelligent woman, with quirky wit and incredible courage throughout her battle with cancer. You will be missed, dear Berna. Love Linda
