November 26, 1955 – Calgary, Alberta
September 9, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Janice Sandwell, 61, on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Foothills Hospital. She was born on November 26, 1955 to Stan and Lois Smith in Calgary.

Janice spent her childhood on a farm outside of Carstairs, and graduated from Hugh Sutherland High School in 1973. Upon graduating from SAIT with a diploma in Chemical Technology, she was employed at Core Labs for 8 years and quickly became a valuable and respected lab technician and later, human resources assistant. By 1983, Janice changed careers and moved to Pan Canadian Petroleum as an Exploitation Technologist. She left this position in 1989 to continue her lifelong dream of raising a family.

On August 8, 1980, Janice married Jonn and they would celebrate 37 wonderful anniversaries together. After losing her first child at birth, their miracle baby, Allen, was born on February 2, 1990. The two were blessed with a second child, Braden, on December 19, 1991. As a mother, Janice successfully managed the family business from her home office, yet never lost sight of what was most important, in her words, “da boys.”

The beautiful and amazing plants that surround the family’s home are a reminder of Janice’s second passion – an award winning garden, a pastime she shared as a member of the Calgary Horticultural Society. Her creativity and entrepreneurial skills also blossomed into the invention of a unique self-watering planter that she fondly called the “Two-Foot Gardener,” and so her passion for gardening also grew into a small business but more importantly, a labour of love. There was never a missed opportunity for a spur of the moment cup of market spice tea shared with her dear friend Loretta, as they solved the problems of the world, while sitting at the kitchen table. Janice was active with the Tai Chi and Qigong community, enjoying the rhythmic movements and inner peace they provided. She looked forward to her monthly meetings of her book club and was an avid reader, but cherished family time above all else; her favourite pastime was Friday evening pizza and movie night with her husband and sons.

Janice is survived by her spouse, Jonn of Calgary; sons, Braden and Allen (Connie) of Calgary; brothers, Ken (Linda) Smith of Carstairs, Jim (Gwen) Smith of Carstairs, Murray (Gabriela Leanca) Smith of Calgary, Rob (Maria) Smith of Darwell, and sister, Bev (Brian Murrell) Myer of Sundre. A loving contingent of nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins were also left behind to mourn.

Janice was predeceased by parents, Stan and Lois Smith and an infant sister, Joanie.

A Celebration of Janice’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Funeral Home. Janice wishes to be cremated and her ashes will be spread on the family farm in Carstairs, around the old tar rock in the pasture, where she knew there had to be a dinosaur egg buried. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would also like to acknowledge the caring and compassionate doctors and staff in Unit 102 of the Foothills Hospital. To those who were with Allen, Braden and myself when she took her final breath, Jim and Sandra Robertshaw, Loretta Hooper, John Conti, Lora Machula, Sara Arumburu, Gaye Kavanagh, Clarke Hillier and Jessica Robertshaw, a very special thank you, Janice knew she was loved until the very end. In lieu of flowers Janice would have wished any memorial donations be made to www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org [1] dedicated to the preservation of her favourite animal, the African elephant.

In living memory of Janice Sandwell, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence from Jacqueline McGrath on September 19th, 2017 12:42 PM

My deepest sympathy to you in your loss. I met Janice so many years when we were young moms. Over the years we lost touch until I ran into Janice at Spruce Meadows at a event. She was sharing her gardening venture with others, I could see it was a passion. We remembered each other like it was yesterday. She was so proud of her family and her direction in life. To learn of this news, is so sad. May your hearts be lifted with the love you shared over the years.

Condolence from Dr. John McGrath on September 20th, 2017 1:11 AM

OK, this one is very hard to write. We both wish we could attend your memorial services today. Janice was one in a million as we might describe the best patient(s) any doctor could have. It was a long and ending happily relationship with (in those days) apparently, both Doctor and Patient satisfaction. Janice was an amazing individual with so much warmth and understanding which will never be forgotten by those who knew her best. Our sympathies to the entire family and regrets we are unable to attend the services of remembrance today but each of you will be in our hearts and minds. A very courageous and remarkable lady your wife and your mother… Sincere condolences always,
