August 23, 1933 – Albu, Estonia
July 9, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
With sadness we announce the passing of our father, brother, son, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather, Ulo (Sandy) Sandre on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at the age of 85 years.
Sandy died peacefully from a long battle with heart failure. He was a fighter and courageously battled on. He was born in Albu, Estonia in 1933 to Ewald and Elli Sandre, both predeceased. His heritage can be traced back to the 1700’s to the rural farming life of Estonia. Sandy eventually moved, with his family, to Tallin, Estonia, to attend school before WWII. He often visited his maternal grandmother on the island of Hiiuma, where he was fortunate enough to visit one last time when visiting Estonia in 2004. He fled Tallin in 1944, during WWII, with his parents and one sister at the time, to Germany and post WWII immigrated to Canada to settle in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) in 1948, Ontario where he grew up with his two sisters, Kulle (Sandra Jokinen) and Silvi (Kurvits-Puskar predeceased). He joined the Canadian Airforce in 1952 at the age of nineteen and married Bernice (nee Kozakiewich) in 1955, and celebrating over sixty years of marriage. He has an active military career and stationed in Germany from 1955 to 1960 and then back to Canada and across the country over many years to eventually retire from the military in Ottawa and the settle in Calgary, AB. Sandy and Bernice had three sons, Larry, Roger and David. He was very competitive and was an avid golfer, often pulling his boys into the sport. He particularly liked to whip us all at the game of Risk- often with all night games. Countless memorable moments with long distance travels across country with either moving or spending summer weeks in Delta Beach, MB at the family cottage, only to be woken early in the morning or kept out late into the sunsets with waterskiing with us and all his nieces and nephews. We also remember travels back to Port Arthur to visit his parents and sisters – with his father’s wood carving and mother’s wild garden outback! He was a lover of downhill skiing too – even after his hip replacements.
He will be lovingly remembered by his three sons, Larry (Colleen), Roger (Beverley) and David; his blessed five grandchildren, Andrew (Brittany), Michelle (Alex), Andrea (Michael), Ashley (Phil) and Brittany; and three great-grandchildren Xander, Isla, Bode. He is also survived by his sister Sandra Jokinen, sister-in-law, Connie (Wally Grant) and family. Sandy also will be missed by many nieces and nephews and extended family.
Sandy was predeceased by his parents, Ewald and Elli Sandre; and his sister Silvi.
