SALIVAN, Dina Lee

March 27, 1965 – Toronto, Ontario
June 2, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Dina Lee Salivan of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the age of 53 years after a long and courageous journey with cancer.

Dina worked at Coca-Cola in Ontario and moved to Calgary to work in operations at the bottling plant in 1998 and quickly made the West her home with a love for the mountains and way of life. All who knew her would say Dina was an extraordinary woman with a wicked sense of humour and a love for all animals two and four legged as exemplified by her love of German Shepherds and loss of her beloved Sammy in 2017. A force of nature, Dina touched everyone she met with a huge heart, aura and attitude, she was not an easy woman to forget. Her love for the 70’s, seniors, the Golden Girls and good old days was unrivalled. Dina made a massive impact on her community, friends and family during her seven-year battle with Cancer when she focused her energies on ‘Making the World a Better Place’. She created a Pay it Forward campaign where she came up with the idea to will approximately $80,000 to hundreds of people with the request that they use the money for charity or other acts of random kindness. Instead of carrying out this portion of her will after her death she decided to execute the idea in her last few years of life. The gifts of kindness ballooned https://www.facebook.com/DinaGivingStories/ as people shared their stories of random acts giving Dina much joy in her final days.

Dina is survived by her mother Norma and her partner Don White; her brother, Gregg Salivan and his partner Stephanie Cox; her nephews, Grant, Aidan, Matthew; niece Kirsten and extensive friends in Calgary and Toronto. Dina was predeceased by her father Don.

A Celebration of Dina’s Life will be held on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in Calgary, AB. Please email lisabratton@shaw.ca for service details. A ceremony will be held in Toronto at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

Special thank you to the angels at Rosedale Hospice and all her amazing Calgary friends who took such special care of her during her long illness, along with her spectacular Medical team at Tom Baker and the hospice, Dr. Coulter, Dr. Nixon, Dr. Wu, Dr. Pickering and Dr. Lemieux.

In living memory of Dina Salivan, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  5. Dina came into our Western lives with a youthful spark and a fashion sense that lit up many a room. Her open mind was quick to absorb and always willing to challenge but her genuine love for people ( and animals ) shone through.
The courage and grace she showed throughout her battle set a sterling example most anyone would be challenged to match.
Thank you for sharing her with us.
She will be missed and remembered by many.

    Dear Norma, Gregg & Family,
Sending my heartfelt and sincere condolences to all of you on the passing of your beloved Dina. Few people in my life have had the impact on me that Dina Salivan has. Dina’s warmth, caring, generosity, kindness, and humour were something to be cherish by all of those who had the privilege to know her. Her shining example of how to live life to the fullest and appreciate life’s beautiful intricacies, combined with her incredible strength, determination and courage through her battle with Cancer, inspired me like no other person in my life has. Dina’s generosity through her selfless Pay it Forward Campaign left an indelible mark on so many lives on this Earth, including mine, and is a wonderful legacy to the beautiful life she lived. I will miss Dina greatly and am heartbroken that she’s gone but I truly hope that she is at peace now and that the family has happier days ahead and knows no more sorrows.
    Sincerely,
    Stuart Shecter

Dina left a legacy of love, humour and generosity that will continue through many generations. I am grateful that she was able to enjoy some of the first fruits of her ‘pay it forward’ campaign. However, the world is a dimmer place without her ….

  13. Kelly, Martin, Sam and Ben Jones :

Norma and Don, Gregg …. please accept our most sincere condolences, and know that we are thinking of you all! When Dina moved into the neighbourhood, she was just a blond blur, passing by, in and out of her house. Then one day my boys (4 and 6?) were playing street hockey in front of our homes, blocking the road. Dina came home (driving her usual speed), pulled up in front of her house and jumped out of her car, bags in hand. I thought she was going to give the boys heck, and went out to smooth things over. Before I could get there, she had thrown her bags down, grabbed a hockey stick and yelled “game on”! She played with the boys for a good half hour, and I fell in love with her right there and then, as did Sam and Ben. Since then, she has become a much loved friend. Loud, hilariously honest and funny, full of life, always welcoming, constantly entertaining, she imprinted on all of us in the “hood” and she was much loved, and will be dearly missed. I couldn’t have been more impressed with her strength and determination, and her resolve to be positive. Low moments turned funny, and certain paramedics asked to be assigned to her, as she was so wonderful to be with. Even at appointments at the doctor, Dina was entertaining other patients in the waiting room, making the nurses and doctors laugh with her way too honest descriptions of what was going on. She was a truly bright light, who loved you all, and is, and will continue to be, much loved on both sides of the country. You know we will help in anyway we can from this end. Our love to you all!
