SALES, Howard Ray

September 25, 1932 – Beaver Crossing, Alberta
June 23, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Howard Ray Sales of Calgary, AB, formerly of Cherry Grove, AB and Redcliff, AB, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the age of 86 years. He was lovingly surrounded by family.

Howard grew up on a farm in Cherry Grove, Alberta, where he began a lifetime of working diligently to help and support others. While carrying many responsibilities at home, he was still able to complete up to grade 9 in a one-room schoolhouse and went far beyond that because he was a lifelong learner who never stopped being curious or learning.

Howard met and married the love of his life, Marg Kirkpatrick, when he was twenty-two years old. Together they farmed and raised five children in Cherry Grove. Throughout this time, he also worked as a heavy equipment operator on the nearby air force base, worked as a painter, opened a paint store, began a cabinet store, and later owned and operated a cabinet factory. In his retirement years, they moved from the farm to an acreage where Howard built his “chick” her dream home, after years of kids and teenagers constantly filling their home to the brim and bursting because of their shared extraordinary hospitality and patience with youthful energy.

They later moved to Redcliff, Alberta, to continue to influence their grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the southern part of the province. There Howard took on numerous construction projects, including building another house, renovating several homes, and providing leadership for church renovation jobs.

The final years of Howard’s life were spent in Calgary, where he continued to be involved in improvements in his condo unit and the building itself. He then shifted his focus to care for his precious wife as her health began to fail, persisting in his faithful commitment to loving and providing for her until she went to heaven.

Howard’s faith was central to his life from the time he was a young boy until the very end of his life. It was his faith that drove his love and generosity for others as well as his dedication to his local church and many missionaries and Christian organizations. He continually provided encouragement and support to his pastors over the years, to others walking alongside him in faith, and to anyone who would listen about his joy in knowing Jesus.

Howard was a remarkably kind, faithful, hardworking man who will be incredibly missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Janet (Greg) Runnalls of Calgary, AB, Jeff (Esther) Sales of Cold Lake, AB, Di (Hal) Cozart of Langdon, AB, Greg (Sandy) Sales of Athabasca, AB, and Trish (Greg) Brown of Calgary, AB; his grandchildren Jaimie (Joel) Tone, Allan (Kristen) Runnalls, and T.J. (Pam) Runnalls, Jennifer Sales-Sawatzky, Shawn (Ceilidh) Sales, Tanya (Kurtis) Millington, Marty (Elyse) Lybbert, Aaron (Chelsey) Lybbert, Brittany Sales (Matt Secord), Courtney (Adrian) Brunette, Jordan Sales, Ashley, Morgan, and Jaxon Brown; as well as fourteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Norma Skjervsen of Cold Lake, AB and Violet Somers of Pierceland, SK; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (Marg) Sales, his grandson Josh Brown, his parents Bruce and Etta Sales, and several siblings.

A Celebration of Howard’s Life will be held at Grand Centre Alliance Church (5403 – 56 Street, Cold Lake, AB) on Saturday, July 6 at 11:00 am. A luncheon will follow at the church. Condolence Messages

  1. Greg and Trish: So sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. When we read the news in the Medicine Hat News it caused us to “walk down” memory lane. All of his work in the church; help with new roof trusses, a huge church kitchen renovation and a set of cupboards we currently have in our basement that Howard helped Steve make in the garage at their Redcliff home. So, sadness was one of the emotions we felt, but at the same time we realized that Howard is in heaven with his heavenly Father and how can we not want that for him. Praying for you and the rest of your family as you prepare to celebrate Howard’s life next weekend in Cold Lake. Steve and Debra
