SABO, Denis James

July 23, 1939 – Kenaston, Saskatchewan
April 13, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Our family is sad to announce the passing of Denis James Sabo – Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, “Duke”, and Friend – on Friday, April 13, 2018. He passed away peacefully in the hospital at the age of 78 years, surrounded by family.

Denis was born in Kenaston and grew up in Sutherland, SK. He was business-minded from an early age, receiving service awards from the Saskatoon Star Phoenix and promotions in the light infantry reserves. After high school, Denis worked for the Saskatoon Co-op and ran hardware departments in Eston and Prince Albert, SK. Denis went on to purchase Rosetown Furniture, where he raised his family and was active in the community as Manager of the Rosetown Redwings hockey club. He also enjoyed playing hockey, golf, and bowling. Denis moved west to Calgary and then further west to Courtenay, BC. During his retirement years he golfed avidly and attended the odd garage sale. He enjoyed time with his family, especially with the grandchildren, attending hockey games and school events as often as possible. Denis’ wisdom, steadfast commitment to his family, and hockey stories are already sadly missed.

Denis is survived by his children, Don (Anita) of Calgary, Debra (Mark) of Calgary, Tim (Karen) of Sundre, and Lisa (Brian) of Calgary; beloved grandchildren, Kendra (Grant) of Burton, NB, Allison and Cole of Calgary, Danita (Kevin) of Cochrane, Benjamin of Sundre, Landon of Calgary, and Brandt of Pincher Creek; great-grandchildren, Kira-Rose, Isabella and Tristan of Burton, NB; brothers Gene (Gail) of Edmonton, and Jack (Isabel) of Saskatoon, SK; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Denis was predeceased by his parents John and Helen; step-father Jack Collier; sister Jeanette; brother-in-law Larry; brother Ken; and niece Jeri, all of Saskatoon, SK; and grand-niece Jana of North Battleford, SK.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff on Unit 61 at the Foothills Hospital for their excellent and compassionate care.

Friends and Family are invited to a Celebration of Denis’ Life held at the Southern Alberta Pioneers Foundation Memorial Building (3625 4th Street SW, Calgary, AB) on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Private interment to take place at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through Your kind thoughts are appreciated in lieu of flowers.

I am so sorry to read of the passing of Denis. I have fond memories of Wednesday nights – bowling and hearts. I remember a New Years Eve when he wasn’t going to stop playing kaiser until he won. Unfortunately he had me for a partner. It was a long night. My thoughts and prayers to his family. Time and memories.

Please accept our condolences on Denis’s passing. Not sure how many of the family and friends know that I am his namesake, but have gone by my middle name my whole life, because “Uncle Denny” spent so much time around our family when I was a toddler. I’ve always been proud of being named after the Duke. Denis always had a way to make others around him feel special, even if that meant playing a joke on them. He will be missed. Your family will be in our hearts and prayers for the days and weeks to come. May he rest in peace.
