RYAN, Kirk Alan

February 18, 1960 – Regina, Saskatchewan
October 15, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Kirk Alan Ryan entered eternal life on October 15th, 2018 in Calgary, with his family by his side. Known as a coach to some, a mentor to others, and a friend to all, Kirk was a competitor right to the end, beating the median prognosis for Glioblastoma by over five years. Kirk’s legacy is carried on by his children, Lauren Lynn Ryan and Nicholas Patrick Ryan, and their mother, Carol Ryan. Together Kirk and Carol raised their children to adulthood. He is also survived his father, Pat Ryan, and four siblings (“Team Ryan”): Karen Ryan, Kevin Ryan, Kathy Prather (Kirk), and Krista Vaugeois (Lorne), and his loving nieces and nephews. Waiting for him on the other side will be his mother, Muriel Ryan (née Hart). Kirk was born on February 18th, 1960 to Muriel and Pat in Regina, Saskatchewan, moving to Calgary three years later. Like his parents and siblings, Kirk was incredibly active within the Triwood Community, spending every spare minute on the hockey rink or baseball field. As star quarterback and teenage heartthrob, Kirk graduated from William Aberhart High School in 1977.

Kirk went on to a successful career in sales and marketing with CJAY92 and QR77 Radio from 1986-1998, breaking countless sales records and meeting many of his lifelong friends along the way. In the late 1990s he left the corporate world and entered The Bean Scene era. Kirk owned and ran the enormously successful Strathcona coffee shop with Carol for 12 years, opening two subsequent locations (Lakeview and Princess Island), and touching the hearts of its patrons who he was delighted to see every morning. At The Bean Scene, Kirk was known as “Mr. Silly Pants” to the neighbourhood kids, and was a friend to many of Calgary’s homeless by providing them with warm drinks every morning before opening. Owning and operating The Bean Scene enabled him to be the hands-on dad and active community member that he was born to be.

From toddlers to adolescence, his kids could always count on their dad to be involved in their sports, whether it was on the hockey rink with Nic in the winter or on the softball field in the summer with Lauren. Kirk believed that every kid should have the chance to play sports, – especially hockey, even if it meant finding them equipment and picking them up for practice himself. Kirk’s favourite position throughout his daughter’s softball career was behind center field, where his yelling and excitement could be kept at bay. Kirk also had a love of travelling and family vacations. You could be sure to find Kirk water-skiing in Windermere, snow-skiing the Back Bowls at Lake Louise, or island-hopping in the Caribbean. Whatever the season, Kirk never stopped moving.

We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Kirk during his 58 years: if something seems fishy – it is; if you catch someone stealing – go up to them and pretend you’re a cop until they give it back; if your brother is pinned on the field at McMahon Stadium by a security guard – elbow slam the guard and run away together; and if you have to take chemotherapy pills, take them on the beach in Mexico with a rum in hand.

Kirk owes many thanks to his surgeon, Dr. John Kelly from the Tom Baker Cancer Centre who, along with the Tom Baker team, facilitated two successful brain surgeries over his five-year battle. He thanks the many kind-hearted nurses and medical staff that shared laughs with him over the years, both at Tom Baker and Dulcina Hospice, and to his close circle of family and friends who left no stone unturned in helping him extend his life and fulfill his wishes in his final months.

Kirk lived a fortunate life, and for that he asked to share his eternal gratitude with everyone that touched his soul here on earth. Everyone who knew and loved Kirk is asked to celebrate his life in their own way, raising a glass of Irish whiskey in his memory. We will be hosting a celebration of his life at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 2:00p.m. In lieu of flowers, Kirk asks that you perform an act of kindness to a stranger.

In living memory of Kirk Ryan, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

    Dear Ryan Family,
We are so sad to hear of Kirk’s passing. He was always such a friendly, funny and upbeat person. His company was always enjoyed. We remember him coming to our house and playing LEGO with our son. He helped us move many years ago, on a weekday, he was our only help. We hope your happy memories of him will sustain you through this sorrow filled time. Thinking of you all.

  16. Dear Ryan family,
    Please accept my condolences.
I can certainly validate Kirk’s ‘early career’ as a coach; Collingwood Elementary school grounds, circa 1970 (?). I was new to the game of fastball and was playing on a team with Kathy. Kathy’s cute older brother (Kirk) was at the game and he stood by first base, providing me with instructions. (I didn’t know what the heck I was doing.) At the age of 10, he was both helpful AND handsome and I, enamoured with him, gladly took his instructions.
Let’s hope there is a game waiting for him on the other side.

  21. To Carol, Lauren and Nick (and other family members) –
What a beautifully written obituary capturing the essence of your husband and father! Kirk was truly one of a kind, he was more than a coach and softball strategy partner to me, he also was the best Americano and iced cappuccino maker, a great sounding board on politics and all the issues of the day, a willing volunteer, a neighbor and a friend and our entire family will miss him dearly. I will indeed raise a glass to him, heaven is a better place for having him in it even though so many of us selfishly want him still here on earth. I truly hope the cherished memories and humorous stories sustain you and comfort you through this time and in the future. Slainte, Coach Kirk ⚾️

We shared the ice on so many teams over the years at Triwood but never realized until now we shared the same birth place and the same move date to Calgary. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Ryan family today. Lifelong friends with Kirk and Kathy, the Ryan family was part of the fabric of Triwood. Kirk and I were defence partners one year (coached by Mr. Ryan) and the team was full of characters, by far the leader of that band was Kirk. One of the most fun years I ever had playing hockey. Kirk and I loved to “mix it up” in front of our own net which almost always ending up with one of us in the sin bin. So happy to be able to visit with Kirk, Kathy and Kevin this past May when I was in town, had a bunch of laughs, mildly inappropriate things were said, a couple of tears and the chance to just hang out like the old days…thank you Kathy! Lots of laughs, lots of stories…the way it should be. Rest peaceful gentle soul…
