Ross, William (Bill) King

William (Bill) King Ross beloved husband of fifty-six years of Mrs. Evelyn Ross of Calgary, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2005 at the age of 80 years.

Bill spent his childhood in Manchuria, and moved to Montreal for his High School and University years. He was a proud member of the Black Watch, seeing action in Belgium and Holland as a platoon commander. Bill finished his degree in Chemical Engineering at McGill University in 1947 and joined Imperial Oil, remaining with the company for the next thirty-eight years. He helped to pioneer many aspects of pollution control and was instrumental in setting up the Alberta Special Waste Management Corporation and was a member of their Board for several years. With a beautiful bass voice, Bill was both a member and a soloist in many choirs in the many cities in which he lived throughout his life including Montreal, QC; Sarnia, ON; Winnipeg, MB; Catania, Sicily, Italy; London, England; Edmonton, AB and Calgary. Bill also delighted in sailing, hiking, skiing and travelling.

Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Colin Ross M.D. and Nancy Ross, Catherine and Neil Schechter, Louise Ross-Johns and Stan Johns, Donald and Fran Ross; and his nine grandchildren Simeon Ross, DC Ross, Laura Schechter, Sam Schechter, Andrew Ross, Keir Ross, Micaela Ross, Connor Ross, Liam Ross and his step-grandsons Matthew Johns and Marc Johns. He is also survived by his brother Bob Ross of Bracebridge, ON and his sister Alice Rothney of Winnipeg, MB. Bill was predeceased by his parents Alexander Ross of Montreal and Grace Davis Ross of Wichita, KS and his sister Jean Morrison of Toronto.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church (924 Heritage Drive S.W.) on Monday, March 21, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bill Ross may be made to the Glenbow Museum’s Acquisition Fund and will be used to purchase objects in his memory.
