ROSS, Norma Ida

January 17, 1942 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
September 30, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Norma Ida Kelm was born January 17, 1942 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to parents Herman and Ida Kelm. She passed away peacefully at South Health Campus at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, September 30, 2018.

Norma went to school until being kicked out in Grade 9. She babysat the Pastor’s children and worked for the Wheat Pool Company before meeting Grant. Grant and Norma met in the choir loft at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Winnipeg. Their hands touch, then that was it. She was 17. Grant was 27. They faced much opposition because of the 10 year age difference but started courting in April and were married in October. Katherine arrived in August, 10 months later. Rhonda and Grant came along quickly after that, they lost one baby then were blessed with Mark.

From Winnipeg the family moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in 1972, they then drove across Canada in 1976 for a new opportunity in Ft. McMurray. It was a big transition to a new modern town but Mom adapted very well. She was very involved in the community and church, making meals and baking to share and teaching Sunday School. She was also a very talented and busy seamstress, sewing suits and shirts for Grant and clothes for the children and then quilts and dresses for 12 grandchildren. They retired to Sherwood Park in 1986 but financial crisis brought them back to Ft. McMurray, to Calgary, to Ft. Saskatchewan then finally back to Calgary.

Norma is survived by her loving husband of 58 years Grant Ross; her daughters and sons-in-law Zeke and Katherine Loyer, Gary and Rhonda Carleton, and sons and daughters-in-law Grant and Brenda Ross, Mark and Roxanne Ross; as well as twelve grandchildren and their spouses Sheldon & Teighan, Jonah, Shelby, Joshua, Sarah, Naomi, Alysha, Caleb, Lydia, Rebecca & Jesús Florín, Aaron & Shelby, Jesse & Morgan; her brother and sister-in-law Art and Donna Kelm; and her sister Linda Krajewski-Kelm.

Norma was predeceased by her father Herman Kelm and her mother Ida Kelm.
