ROSE, Robert Jabez

March 12, 1931 – Hanna Alberta
December 28, 2018 – Calgary Alberta

Robert J. Rose of Calgary passed away peacefully at 1:01 AM this 28th day of December 2018, at the age of 87, after a short battle with cancer.

In his own words, “People will say I died of cancer, but actually it was old age, cancer was just the mechanism.”

Bob was most known for his 60+ year career in Wildlife Photography and the legacy he leaves world wide in published photographs. In addition to magazine articles, and pictures made into jigsaw puzzles and playing cards in Austria, he also had pictures displayed in the New York State Museum, the National Audubon Society and many other publications who used his photographs to accompany articles. As a hunter, Bob had the distinction of having been issued License number 1, the very first license for a non-resident hunter in the Northwest Territories in 1965. In his career as an investment broker, he served as Chairman of the Canadian Investment Dealers Association, as a Governor of the Alberta Stock Exchange, among others.

Bob is survived by his son, Keith (Sue) Rose; his daughter, Lyla Rose; his grandchildren, Jordan Rose and Auriel Rose; his brother, Norman (Veva) Rose; along with a huge number of family members and friends.

Bob was predeceased by his wife of sixty-three years Ella Mathilda Rose (nee Morck) on August 25, 2016; by his parents, Alfred and Matilda Rose (nee Schneider); and his brother, Jim Rose.

Bob lived a full life, filled with travel and adventure with the love of his life Ella. They are back together now, with God, and off on their next adventure together. Bob will be missed by all those who had the good fortune to know him.

A memorial service will be held for Bob at a future date, Bob’s wisdom again, “Have it when the weather is better, the people who care will be there, whenever it happens.”

A Memorial Service will be held at Sharon Danish Lutheran Church (210 10 Avenue NE, Calgary, AB), on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the church hall.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Bethany Care Foundation, 100 – 2915 26 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2B-2W6 or through the website, 1-403-210-4600. Condolences may be forwarded through

The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Bethany Care Center for their compassion and care for both Bob and Ella.

In living memory of Bob Rose, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  8. Bob hired me a broker at McDermid Miller and McDermid and I will never forget him for his sage advice and guidance. He always made time to explain the intricacies of the securities industry and how it really worked. Learning the art of the business from pros like Bob, Jack, John and Brian during my first years was like getting a Masters degree.
I admired him Bob immensely, as did many others. I know he lived a very fulfilling life through his photography.
    Condolences to family and friends.
