November 18, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Jan Rogalski was granted eternal rest on Saturday, November 18, 2017 in Calgary, AB at the age of 100 years and 11 months.

He was born in Łuck, Poland on December 25, 1916 to parents Antoni and Julianna Rogalski. He served in the Polish army during WWII and spent five years in a prisoner-of-war camp in Neubrandenburg, Germany. After his release in 1945, he married Maria (Mary) Kacperski and they remained in Germany where he worked as Block Leader in the Polish refugee camp in Lübeck. In May 1950, with the assistance of the International Refugee Organization, he immigrated to Canada together with his wife and eldest daughter. After working on the sugar beet farms in Raymond, AB for a short time, he moved his family to Calgary where they were reunited with friends who had also fled from war-torn Europe. Jan was employed as a Carman at the Canadian Pacific Railway Ogden Shops for most of his life and retired in 1982. He was active in Calgary’s Polish community for many years and was a lifetime member of the SPK Polish Combatants Association #18.

Jan is survived by his loving family: daughters Patricia (Lino) De Paoli of Calgary and Wanda (Adam) Wilk of Cloverdale, BC; five grandchildren: Dean (Linda) De Paoli, Jim (Cindy) De Paoli, Julie (Sean) Lee, Jackie Wilk (Dave Hood) and Mark (Heidi) Wilk; nine great-grandchildren: Matthew, Brendan and Brittany Lee; Roman and Mario De Paoli; Joshua and Niko Wilk; Alexis and Brandon Hood; and by his relatives in Poland.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary on April 1, 2014 and by his son Edward on November 11, 2011.

At Jan’s request, no formal service will be held. Cremation has taken place and he will be reunited with his wife in the Queen’s Park Mausoleum. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

My sincere condolences to Tish, Wanda and all the extended Rogalski family. John has left behind an honourable legacy not only for his family but also the organizations, church and community he served. He is among one of the last members whose example will live on. Along with those who suffered atrocities of the war he came to this country and with courage rebuilt his life with integrity. I fondly remember our early days in Bridgeland. They were special times. I don’t think we will have the privilege of knowing a generation such as theirs again. I’m proud to have been a part of that journey. Wishing you comfort and peace.
