ROBERTSON HANNON, Mary Elizabeth (Betty)

July 8, 1927 – Pembroke, Ontario
July 26, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Robertson Hannon (nee Kennedy) passed away at Calgary, Alberta on July 26, 2019 at the age of 92.

Betty was born July 8, 1927 in Pembroke, Ontario, the daughter of Gertrude and Roy Kennedy. She was raised in Pembroke and Renfrew, Ontario. She graduated from Queen’s University in 1949 (Arts), and from the University of Toronto in 1953 (Library Science). Betty and her first husband George Robertson met at Queen’s University, after George returned from WWII. They were married in 1953, and travelled west to live in the Cypress Hills, and then in Calgary, where they raised two children, James and Elizabeth. George and Betty were devoted parents who stressed the importance of education and personal integrity. Betty was active in Grace Presbyterian Church, and the Canadian Federation of University Women. In her career as a librarian and as a volunteer, she advocated for the development of school libraries. Betty grew up spending summers at her parents’ cottage on Golden Lake in the Ottawa Valley and loved gathering at the Robertson cottage at Shuswap Lake with family, friends and neighbours to swim, read and play bridge. Gracious and kind, Betty was often described as “a real lady”, who worked to make everyone around her feel comfortable. Her knowledge of language was profound and her ability to conjugate a verb or spot a grammatical mistake was unparalleled. A wonderful role model for her family and a loyal friend, Betty was bright, independent, curious and great fun to be with.
Betty was predeceased by George in 2004. She is survived by her second husband Norbert Hannon; her children, James Robertson (Cindy) and Elizabeth Shepherd (Robert). She was the loving grandmother of Alexander and William Shepherd. She is also survived by Norbert’s children, Murph Hannon (Charlotte), Connor Hannon and Andrea Hannon Widdifield (Rich).

A Memorial Service to commemorate Betty will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 – 15th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com. The family wishes to thank Dr. Chi Diep, Dr. John Han and the nursing staff at Staywell Manor for the excellent care they provided to Betty.

In living memory of Elizabeth Robertson Hannon, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  3. Dear Norbert, James, Elizabeth and Families,
We are long time members at Grace Presbyterian Church so we knew Betty over many years. She has not been able to come for a few years but from my vantage in the choir,
I always search for her and you, Norbert, in your usual location.
I send to all of your families my deepest sympathy. May you be comforted by your wonderful memories of beautiful Betty. I hope that you will also find great comfort in God’s Easter promise of life everlasting and that we will all meet again in God’s Holy Presence. Courage, strength and blessings as you each grieve for Betty.
    Fran Cormack
P.S. I spend my summers on the Shuswap so I am thinking of you as you bring Betty’s remains to your beautiful, happy place here. I will miss her service at Grace on August 20 but will hold you in my thoughts and prayers.

  6. Leanne Johancsik

On behalf of my mom Shirley Cooke I want to extend deepest sympathies on the passing of Betty. Shirley always described Betty as her best and oldest friend. I regret that due to Shirley’s declining health I was unable to bring her to visit Betty. She asked about her frequently.
I remember visiting at the summer cottage in BC when we were growing up. Our families were linked for a very long time.
Thinking of you at this time.
    Love,
    Leanne Johancsik (Cooke)
