RICHARDSON, Cynthia Mary (nee Willis)
December 26, 1925 – Calgary, Alberta
August 17, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that the family of Cynthia Mary Richardson (nee Willis) announce her passing at Holy Cross Manor in Calgary, Alberta on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at the age of 91 years.

Cynthia, or Mary, as her Alberta family called her, started her journey on December 26, 1925. She was the third and youngest child of Tom and Ruth Willis. She grew up on a farm just outside of Elnora, Alberta. Life on the farm in the thirties meant mom was no stranger to hard work. She rode a horse to Cornwall Valley country school from the age of seven until grade nine. She left home at sixteen to attend boarding school for her grade ten year in Red Deer, AB. She joined the war effort on January 1, 1944 with the Royal Canadian Air Force. She trained down East at Camp Borden and was stationed at Trenton, ON, for two and a half years. After WWII she took administrative training in Calgary and worked for some of the original oil and gas companies including Link, Downing and Cook, Cree Oil and Shell Oil. During this time, mom took up golf, skiing, flying, sewing and travelled to Europe with friends.

It was a mutual love of flying that brought mom and dad together. Mom had already earned her pilot’s licence when dad, upon recently receiving his, was introduced to mom. It was love at first sight and they were married within the year, 1962. After settling on the family farm just outside of Kindersley, SK, Tom and Cindy began their family.

Mom and dad enjoyed farm life until August 12, 1980, when dad passed away suddenly, as the plane he was piloting crashed. Mom adjusted to life as a single parent and held the farm together with some help from family, friends and neighbors. Family and faith were always closest to mom’s heart. Through the years, mom was involved in many clubs and organizations some of which included the Women’s Auxillary Legion, St. Paul’s U.C.W., Gleneath Camera Club, Kindersley Ladies Golf, bridge, bowling, and the Merrington Women’s Institute. She also taught Sunday School and served on committees for the United Church.

Mom, an avid traveller, had memorable trips to the U.K., Ecuador, Hong Kong, the East Coast, Alaska, Hawaii and often to the West Coast; all the while she continued to be a big part of her children’s lives, and especially the lives of her cherished grandchildren. Grandma was always ready for a fun game of ‘Tiddlywinks’ or ‘Scrabble’. She liked to knit and crochet, and made sure each grandchild received a keepsake afghan.

Although family and faith were closest to mom’s heart her other interests were extensive. She loved gardening and nature, and could name all the mountain peaks on the way up to Banff. Mom and dad were ahead of their time growing ‘organic’ produce and learning about vitamins and supplements. Mom was always very interested in what was going on in the world and kept current on world events.

After battling cancer in 2011 and a fractured pelvis in 2012, mom moved from Kindersley back to Calgary in 2013, to be closer to family. Her smile and affection will be greatly missed by all.

Mom will be lovingly remembered by her three children and their spouses, Joan and Dave Miller of Calgary, Lisa and Dan Hupka of Saskatoon, SK, and Andrew and Paula Richardson of Calgary; eight grandchildren, Tina, Amy and Liam Miller, Nathan, Adam and Owen Hupka, and Thomas and Sara Richardson. Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband, Tom Richardson of Kindersley, SK.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary) on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 from 1:00p.m. to 2:00p.m.

I am very sorry to be informed today of the passing of your lovely mother, who was a great bridge player along with my mother Anne in Kindersley. They were also good neighbors while living in Prairie View Chalet for several years. My sincere condolences to you all. Adele Ingram-Whatley.

Condolence from Rella Lavoie on August 26th, 2017 2:05 PM

Our sincere sympathy to the Richardson family from all the members of the Gleneath Camera Club. Your mom was a dedicated member for many years. She loved nature & had the ability to capture special moments with her photography. One such moment was when a large flock of Bohemian waxwings were enjoying taking a bath in her backyard fountain. We will all miss her.
