  1. FEARLESS , UNCOMPROMISING INTEGRITY
I was luck enough to know Hale for almost 30 years. He had some developmental challenges, but had a fierce independent streak. He was always his own man , he refused to be bullied, or pigeon
holed. 2 brief stories to show his characture .

Our office had arranged to get him into government housing, he was independent and did not want to live with other people, but finally agreed to give it a try( after much cajoling )
The next morning it was minus 30 , snowing with a wind chill. I found him huddled by my outside door. covered in snow, and clearly freezing. We both knew he would rather freeze to death than compromise his integrity.

He got his way and lived alone. Later we visited his house. Picture the scene : Imagine thousands upon thousands of books, all westerns, it was like walking through a maze. they were piled everywhere. Hale had read every one of them.

Hale saw himself ,and lived his life like a cowboy hero in one of his novels . Honest ,Fearless and Uncompromising

  2. I helped move Hale from Creston to Calgary, one of my best memories was teaching Hale how to drink pop out of can. He was watching with amazement as I popped the tab and started drinking a pop. I then realized that Hale had only drank pop from a cup and never from a can.

After his first few attempts with pop drizzling from his mouth, I showed him how to move the tab so that he could drink freely. Hale racked this up as just another of his many accomplishments.

Whenever I saw Hale in Calgary after that, he would always yell at me from a distance calling me “dear” until I stopped and greeted him. This was embarrassing but at the same always put a smile on my face.
