RICHARDS, Ruth Margaret (nee Wilton)

February 9, 1926 – Swift Current, Saskatchewan
September 21, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Ruth Richards of Calgary passed away on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the age of 92 years.

Ruth is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Brian Hawrys; son and daughter-in-law, Bill Richards and Cynthia Asquin-Richards; five grandchildren, Michael and Michelle Hawrys, Stephen Hawrys (Dr. Nathalia Travi Canabarro), Alex Richards (Dr. Tom Blake), Kathryn and Nick Adair, and Callum Richards; two great-grandchildren, Avery and Elijah Hawrys; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Norm Richards, and two brothers Art Wilton and Jack Wilton.

Ruth was raised in a sod house in Somme in northern Saskatchewan, before moving to a wood house when she was three. She attended a one room school that she walked to with the teacher and her brothers. When she was sixteen, she moved to Chilliwack, BC, and from there to Vancouver when she was twenty-two. She attended secretarial college and worked at Brackman Kerr until married the love of her life, Norm Richards, on October 13, 1952. They lived in Vancouver and North Vancouver until 1973 when they moved to Braeside in Calgary. They enjoyed travelling, square dancing, golf at Willow Park Golf course, trips to the coast to visit Norma, and Stampeder football games (She loved the Labour Day game this year). Ruth also enjoyed singing, sewing and her family. After over fifty years of marriage, in 2005, Norm passed away. In 2009 Ruth decided to make life easier and moved to the Manor at Garrison Woods. She made many new friends and loved her time there. In 2016 everyone in the Manor joined us to celebrate her 90th birthday. We would like to thank everyone at the Manor, all the staff and other residents, for their continued support of Mom over the past nine years. Ann Baertsch deserves a very special thank you for her care, friendship, and devotion.

  2. The family of Ruth Richardson:
I was in CAWives with your mother. She was always a lively member and an interesting person.
She was also a proud, caring mother–I remember a silk wedding dress and an allergy—
What I mostly remember is she always wore a hat to keep her warm. I have been following her advice.
    My deepest sympathy Ilene Duska
