RENCHKO, Jean Julien

September 15, 1932 – San Fernando, Trinidad, West Indies
April 20, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

Jean, beloved wife of William (Bill) of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the age of 83 years.

Jean was born in San Fernando, Trinidad, WI. When Jean was 25 years old she left Trinidad and travelled to New York City, England, and eventually settled in Canada where she met Bill in Estevan, Saskatchewan. Shortly after getting married, Bill and Jean moved to Calgary where they raised their family. Jean was a lifelong volunteer and was active in Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 50 years, Catholic Women’s League, Regnum Christi Legionaries of Christ, the 1988 Winter Olympics, the University of Calgary and the Duke of
Edinburgh Award. She also spent many years volunteering at school, community, and sporting activities.

Jean is survived by her loving husband Bill and five children: Patrick (Nancy); Christine (Michael) of Kingston, Ontario; Colleen (Martin); Corinne (David) of Canmore, Alberta; and Caralyn (Scott). She was the proud, loving Grandma JJ to fifteen grandchildren: Marisa, Elise, Mikayla, Luke, Nicole, Jack, Andrew, Matthew, Nicholas, Mark, Liam, Lily, Clara, Mary, and Sophie. She is survived by her brothers Rapheal (Joan) and Desmond Waithe. Jean was predeceased by her parents, James Julien and Wilma Sylvia Waithe, and her brothers Michael and Peter Waithe.

Jean loved well and was so deeply loved by many. She made everyone in her presence feel included and inspired, all the while looking stylish! Jean has proven with her strong faith that miracles do happen. She demonstrated that a positive attitude, sheer determination, and constant hard work can significantly alter life’s events. God has sent for our dear wife, mother, sister, Grandma JJ, and friend. Encouraging post secondary education was very important to Jean. The Renchko family will be setting up a scholarship fund in Jean’s memory. In lieu of flowers donations are welcome to establish this scholarship. Cheques can be made payable to “Bishop Carroll High School”, Attention: Renchko Family Scholarship and mailed to Bishop Carroll High School, 4624 Richard Road SW, Calgary, Alberta, T3E 6L1. My dear Uncle Bill & family,
I am still in shock and cannot grasp the idea that Aunty Jean’s voice will no longer be on the other side of the phone. I am so thankful that she showed me what a true woman stood for. I will continue to live a life that I know she would be proud of. I can hear her now, “June-Marie, I am so proud of you and you remind me so much of myself when I was younger.’ She often said this to me.
I miss you so much Aunty Jean. Thank you for always being there for me and explaining things I did not fully did not understand. You are my mentor. You are my rock.

    I love you.

    Julie and Barrie Orr:

We are so sorry to hear about Jean’s passing. Jean and I shared many days together raising our families. We exchanged babysitting days when the kids were young. I was able to observe Jean’s parenting skills in those days and no wonder the family all turned out so amazing. Jean had such a good heart. She will never be forgotten. Always loved. Julie OrrJulie

My Mom & Stepdad had the pleasure of staying with Bill & Jean a few years ago, while visiting Calgary, and my Mom still talks about how much they enjoyed their visit. Jean was a very special person who led an exemplary & full life in serving others and she will be a tough act to follow.

  14. My mother and Jean stayed friends long after my mom settled in NYC and Jean in Calgary. I remember my mom speaking to Jean late at night because of the time difference and because in those days long distance rates were cheaper at night. My mother always sounded like a giddy teenager talking to Jean. They would talk for hours.

In 94 I visited the Renchko family home in Calgary and was treated like a prince. I loved Jean immediately. She was so straight forward and had such a good heart, a real forced to reckoned with. She would do anything for friends and family. One tough lady. Could see why she and my mom hit it of.

Lots of love to the Renchko family. This is a big loss for everyone who knew her, yet I think we are all grateful for having had the chance!

My deepest sympathy to Bill and all of the Renchko family. Bill and Jean opened their home to me, my sister Heather and her niece Susan in 1975 while we looked for jobs and a place to live in Calgary. We were a part of their family for six weeks, and I have had a very special place in my heart for Jean ever since. She was a very loving and encouraging person and cried when we moved out on our own. My sister and I eventually moved back home to Newfoundland, but we have kept in touch with Jean over the years. She will always be special to us, and I will miss her very much. Rest in peace special lady.

Renchko Family, I had the pleasure to visit with Mrs and Mr. Renchko many years ago at a church senior function that I attended with my mom, who had recently lossed my dad. It was nice to catch up with the Renchko family and hear of wheres and whats of the Renchko children, as the Jorgensen children had all went to school with the Renchkos for years. I now can call Caralyn a friend, and have had the pleasure getting to know Caralyn and her family in Chaparral. I am a very sorry to hear the loss of Mrs. Renchko and my prayers and thoughts are with you at this time. God Bless

Jean and I share a very special bond.We arrived on the planet on the same day, a few hours apart, to two sets of parents who knew each other well. A more personal connection emerged during our school days at St. Joseph’s Convent in Trinidad and that connection has maintained during our “free and easy” years in Trinidad and in Canada, and for the last 60 years in Canada with our families. Jean, and later Bill, was always there for me and my family in times of joy and need and support. I dare to say we were there for each other even though separated by distance. I will miss our lengthy though infrequent phone calls, holidays and celebrations shared. – sometimes doubling the number of candles on the birthday cake – and our more recent meetings at Sandy Point Beach Club in Tobago. There is now a void in my life and a joyful thankfulness for the times we shared. We share your sorrow Bill, Pat, Christine, Colleen, Corinne and Caralyn along with your families.
    Rest in Peace dearest Jean.

    Dear Uncle Bill and family,
My prayers and heart felt love goes out to you all during this time of sorrow and loss. Aunty Jean was a light in everyone’s life, and her bright beam will be missed. She lit up the room with her warm smile and laugh and always had an encouraging word to say. Even though distance was between us, (June-Marie and I) she always made sure to call and let us know she was thinking of us and loved us very much. She was our connection to Daddy and seeing her and talking to her made me feel so much closer to him. She was there for us during the last year of his illness, always touching base to make sure we were keeping strong. I will forever be grateful for her love and kindness and for keeping us close to her heart during this difficult time. She always thought of others and had such empathy for the situation they were going through.

I love you Aunt Jean, and will miss your sweet soft voice and kind words when you call, but I know you are smiling because you are home with God.

    Love you forever and always,
    Cindy

I am going to miss my Aunty Jean so much.
In this busy world of ours, Aunty Jean made sure she kept in touch with each one of us. No matter how far we were from each other, she would find me and send that card, or letter or make that call.
I always enjoyed her visits to Toronto. At times they were very quick, at times just a call, but she made sure I knew that she was thinking of me and to say, “I love you.” Aunty Jean was one of a kind.

My dear Uncle Bill, cousins & families, I want you to know that Aunty Jean was a very positive influence in my life and I hope to continue to be the example that would make her proud.
