REIST, Donald (Don) Gene

December 7, 1953 – Wetaskiwin, Alberta
June 14, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald (Don) Gene Reist on Friday, June 14, 2019 at Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 65.

Don was born in Wetaskiwin on December 7, 1953. He graduated from Wetaskiwin Composite High School. He married Norine in April 1974. Don spent his adult years living in a number of places; most notably Calgary, Balzac and Onoway Alberta, a number of years in Victoria, British Columbia near his sister Sandy and finally retiring back in Airdrie, Alberta to be with his grandchildren. He took a great deal of pride in knowing that his family was among the earliest settlers of Alberta – he eagerly sought opportunities to bring family together and kept the memory of his parents and ancestors alive.

Don’s professional and personal passions were rooted in automobiles and it did not go unnoticed. He was a long-time member of the Table Top Model Car Club in Calgary – having built thousands of scale models of his favorite vehicles from around the globe. This passion also followed him through an early career in the automotive industry, to lovingly restoring his parent’s first new vehicle – a 1975 Duster which remains in the family today – and finally into retirement as he remained involved with several local vehicle dealerships and was well known and liked as the primary driver for the Airdrie Party Bus.

Don will be fondly remembered by Norine, his loving wife of forty five years; his three sons, Michael (Lori), Darcey, and Cory (Shianne); his eleven grandchildren Autumn, Addison, Samuel, Mason, Michael, Payton, Katelyn, Isabelle, Maci-Lynn, MacKenzie and Damon; his sister Marilyn Kasha; his nephews Randy and Shane (Christie) and his niece Shawna (Zac); along with many extended family members and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Irvin “Boosie” and Susanne “Susie” Reist, and his sister and brother-in-law Sandra & George Skirrow.

Family and friends from the community are invited to mingle and share some light food and refreshments, fond memories and stories at an informal Celebration of Life for Don, at Balzac Community Hall on Thursday, July 11, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Don Reist, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Airdrie, 300 TOWERLANE DRIVE, AIRDRIE, AB. Telephone: 403-948-1100.

Don and I spent many cold and noisy days riding a shockless school bus together to Clear Vista School back in the 60s. We were good friends then but grew apart after school but I remember our time together fondly. Childhood friends are forever.
    Go with grace Donnie.
