REA, Michelangelo

September 17, 1967 – June 20, 2017

It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the passing of Michelangelo Rea of Airdrie, Alberta, on June 20, 2017.

In 1996 Michael and Nancy became the proud owners of Sandro’s Restaurant and Pizzeria. The restaurant showcased Michael’s proud Italian heritage where his parents, siblings and extended family all took part in making it so successful. In 2009, after serious renovations from a fire to the building, Michael changed the name to Rea’s Italian Cucina, officially making it the family’s restaurant. For over two decades the Rea’s developed several close relationships with clientele and staff, treating them all like family, which along with an unforgettable menu were the recipe for their success. Aside from his family, Michael loved the Calgary Flames, the Calgary Stampeders, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Michael enjoyed several family trips to Mexico, Florida, New Brunswick and his favorite destination, Las Vegas. Michael enjoyed hunting, fishing and cooking huge meals for his family and friends. He shared all these passions with his children, which has left us with a beautiful legacy. Michael will be remembered as a fun loving spirit, who was quick with a joke, or an insult to brighten up any mood. Michael could be seen putting his fingers in his customers drink to “test the temperature” or embarrass a friend by accusing them of looking at his behind. His generosity and genuine concern for other was second to none. He was admired and highly respected in the Italian and business community.

Michael was a loving husband to Nancy (Preston); proud father to Dario, Mikaela, Matteo and Dante; cherished son of Maria Rea as well as being brother to Maria (Gary) Thibault, Anna (Collin) Schafer, Alfredo Rea as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. He will be deeply missed by his mother in law Kathleen Preston and his extended family from Miramichi, New Brunswick. Michael was also predeceased by his father Franco Rea, uncle Raffaelle Rea, his cousin Gina (Rea) Curti and his father in law, John Preston.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, June 23, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be held at ST. PAUL’S CATHOLIC CHURCH (1305 Main Street, Airdrie, AB) on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Michelangelo Rea, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Dear Nancy and the Rea family, words cannot express how deeply saddened we were to hear of Michael’s passing. He was the ultimate host and the world has sadly lost a true master of hospitality and graciousness. Being welcomed by you and Michael to Rea’s was special, as if we were being welcomed into your own home. Michael’s love for his family, his kindness towards everyone, his unique brand of humour, and the introduction of Limoncello into our lives will always be remembered. Nancy, you and your family continue to be in our prayers, may God continue to bless each and every one of you. Rest well Michael, you were truly one in a million.

We had the wonderful blessing of meeting Mike & his family when he first became owner of Sandro’s. As many others, we loved how welcomed he made us feel over the years to the point that quickly the Rea’s became ‘family’. We certainly celebrated many weekly & celebratory dinners over the years. Early on whether regularly or casually, my husband and sons were part of the Sandro’s & Rea’s staff team extraordinaire and absolutely loved getting to know Mike and his family! How wonderful to witness his kindness, his love of family/friends and his humor was second to none!!

Traits that I recognize that he passed onto his children are; a sense of humour, a love of family and friends, the love of sports, and the fact that others would gravitate to them. They make other people feel better and from what I understand about Mike, that was important to him. I know the closeness of the family will get them through this difficult time. We were both shocked and devastated when we heard of Mike’s passing. We were introduced to Rea’s a few years ago by good friends, the Greco’s, and it has been our ‘go-to’ since then. Whenever we wanted to celebrate a special occasion or get together with loving friends, Rea’s was always the first choice. Mike and all the staff at the restaurant are always warm and welcoming. We can relate to Mike’s ‘quick insults’ or funny moments to put a smile on his customers faces – I was privy to many of them (insert big smile). We will surely miss his face the next time we come in. We were regular customers at the restaurant for over 20 years and we always joked with Mike, I always called him Mickey which I know he hated and he always would say put extra parsley on my food!!

We are deeply saddened by the loss of this extraordinary man. Mike wasn’t only a boss to me while working at the Ramada in the early 90’s, he was like a big brother through those awkward teenage years. His sense of humour, sheepish grin and warm, welcoming eyes made going to work a joy. It was comforting to find, that years later when I found him successfully running his own place, he hadn’t changed and continued to welcome me and my family with open arms.

May you find strength surrounded by family and friends through this extremely challenging time. Peace, Love & Light. Karina Berrade Valleau (& all of the Berrade Family) xox

We are so very shocked and saddened about the devastating passing of your beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and dear friend to so many. Mike and your family have been such an important part of so many of our family’s celebrations over the decades now. You all made us feel like part of your gorgeous family. Mike’s sense of humour was always something we looked forward to — his stories and anecdotes always made us laugh — a delightful aperetif to the always fabulous food.
Stephen, Tyrone, Nolan and I will be praying for all of you at this difficult time as you grieve and mourn the loss of someone so special. With our deepest condolences,
    Stephen, Licia, Tyrone and Nolan

  80. Alfredo, Mikaela, and families, we are so very sad to hear of Mike’s passing. Our curling team has been dining at Reas since it was Sandros, and nowadays my husband and I tend to end up there every Friday evening, our favourite restaurant in Calgary. Mike was always a pleasure to see and to deal with, his professionalism was second to none. We will all miss his welcoming smile.

  86. To Nancy including all of the Rea family. My wife and I along with our family spent many times at Sandro’s then Rea’s over the last 20 years. We all enjoyed the entire family’s friendship and professional service. when we visited there. We always came away in better spirits, after listening to the sharp humour and digs by Michael & Alfredo. Michael will be truly missed as he was an outstanding family man, as well as being a great Chef, Entrepreneur, humorous, kind person and most of all being a good friend.

  94. John and Brenda Sears

    Dear Rea family,
We are so very sorry to hear of the passing of your dear Michael. Our hearts are breaking for you.
When Brenda’s brother Jim and Jeanni introduced us to Sandros so many years ago, we were delighted to find not only a fantastic place to dine, but a warm, fun family to enjoy our meals with. Mike’s sharp wit was hilarious!
When Jim died we were heartbroken. Now, though we miss him still, the sharp pain has been softened by time and by the sweet bouquet of memories.
Through this terrible time may you find strength in the love and support of family and friends. Know that our hearts are with you.
And…may your garden of sweet memories of Michael help you find comfort and peace. With all our hearts we pray for you all.

We love you all so much and continue to pray for your strength and peace.

Catherine and I offer our sincere condolences to Michael’s family. Michael was a respected member of the local restaurant community and really understood quality food and service.
