March 3, 1921 – Toronto, Ontario
May 11, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Joyce was born on March 3, 1921 in Toronto. She graduated from Mimico High School in 1938, and spent many of her summers at the family cottage at Fenelon Falls, Ontario and, after her marriage, at a new cottage at Duclos Point on Lake Simcoe. Her fondest athletic activity was swimming. An active member of the Salvation Army, Joyce played double-bell euphonium in the band. She worked as a secretary to the general manager of the Toronto Eastman Kodak store until she met her husband Jack, who applied for work there after the war. As a married woman, besides raising three children, Joyce was a Past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was always active in choirs since the age of thirteen, first with the Salvation Army, followed by Parkdale Baptist Church in Toronto, First Baptist Church in Calgary, Georgetown, Ontario Baptist Church, and then a return to First Baptist in Calgary. She also sang for a time with the Georgetown Choral Society. Her love of singing was passed on to all of her children. She taught Sunday School classes at all her churches and, at First Baptist Church, was active in the MacDonald Mission Group (subsequently Malcolm Group), as well as the FBC Camera Club and MAFIA adult fellowship group. Joyce was an enthusiastic and gifted craftsperson, winning Calgary Stampede awards for knitting, and also participated in quilting, decoupage, building ecology boxes, etc. She is also remembered fondly at FBC for her oral recitations, especially “Albert and the Lion.” She was also a huge Blue Jays fan. Everyone who knew Joyce will miss her kindness and compassion, her sense of humour and sincere interest in the wellbeing of others, as well as her warm hospitality and great cooking.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Russ of Saskatoon, and Keith (Nada) of Calgary; grandchildren, Jared (Melissa Poirier) of Calgary, Heather (Kevin) Kernohan of Saskatoon, and Joshua of Saskatoon; great-granddaughter Chloe Kernohan of Saskatoon, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Joyce was predeceased by her husband Jack of sixty years, her daughter Cathi, and her granddaughter, Bethany.

A Celebration of Joyce’s Life will be held at Altadore Baptist Church (4304 – 16th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Salvation Army, 1731 29th Street SW Calgary, AB, T3C 1M6, on line at www.salvationarmy.ca [1], or by phone 403-410-1112. Condolences for the family of “RAMSDEN, Joyce Elaine (nee Mitchell)”

Condolence from June and Peter Curtis on July 15th, 2019 1:57 PM

Saddened to hear this news. Joyce and Jack warmly welcomed us into their home on a few occasions as we visited their daughter Cathi and by their association with Ruth and Russell Harmen in England. We remember their barbecue lunch and playing tennis in Calgary when they moved into the condo. Joyce was a lovely lady with a huge smile and sense of humour. Our love to all the family. June and Peter Curtis
