October 24, 2016 – Calgary, AB

Catherine Ramsden passed on to her last great adventure Monday, October 24, 2016 at Rockyview Hospital, succumbing at last to pancreatic cancer. Through it all, she maintained her strength of character, her generosity and her sense of humour.

Cathi was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto. When she was seven, her family moved to Calgary and here she stayed except for a year in England where she earned a Master’s degree at the University of Nottingham. Cathi loved life and really loved music, books and outdoor adventures.

She will be sorely missed by her mother Joyce Ramsden; her brother Russ and his children Heather (Kevin) Kernohan, and Joshua; her brother Keith (Nada) and their son, Jared; as well as her many friends from all her involvement as a teacher and administrator with the Calgary Board of Education at Simon Fraser Junior High and Winston Churchill, John G. Diefenbaker, Ernest Manning, Western Canada and Lord Beaverbrook High Schools as well as Chinook Learning Centre; Westwinds Music Society; Calgary Stampede Talent Search judging panel; Wordfest; Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners; her two book clubs, Trailmix Hiking group; her great group of loving friends in England, and her wonderful ‘block party’ neighbours . Cathi was predeceased by her father Jack and her niece Bethany.

A Celebration of Cathi’s Life will be held at First Baptist Church (1311 – 4th Street S.W.) on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. (car-pooling recommended) Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Condolences for the family of “RAMSDEN, Catherine “Cathi” Joyce”

Condolence from Karen Todd-Larson on October 28th, 2016 12:33 PM

Russ, Keith and Mrs, Ramsden (and the entire Ramsden family),
I am so sorry for your loss. Cathi was such a delightful person and her absence will be felt tremendously. I met Cathi when I was 13. It was her first year teaching and my first year of Junior HS. She became my first school sports coach and she was that special teacher with whom relationships were more real. I am sure that you know she was well thought of by students and teachers alike: fair and firm but fun and intelligent. Later,as I made my way in the world, she became my mentor, confident and very happily my friend. It is no small matter that she was one of the first people that I came out to. Over our forty plus years as friends she and I laughed a lot, shared a lot of books and walks and coffees and a memorable trip to Wales. I will miss her wisdom and compassion and joy. She remains emblematic of the person that I want to be when I grow up.

My heart goes out to the whole family. I have a sense of how central she was in all of your lives.
I worked with Cathi back in the 80s and then most recently with CALL. She was always so bright, so full of ideas, so capable, so friendly and so much fun.

Condolence from Fran Schneidmiller on October 28th, 2016 7:04 PM

My heartfelt condolences to Cathi’s family. It has been many years since our trio days but I still have a tape recording of a couple of our songs.
Some guy told us that girls couldn’t sing “Swing Low Chariot” but Cathi, Ruth and I rocked it and heard applause in church for the first time. I wish this was on my tape!
May you find comfort in happy memories.
Blessings, Fran (Farr) Schneidmiller

Condolence from Murray Goddard on October 30th, 2016 7:08 AM

To the Ramsden family ,
I was so sorry to hear about your loss. Like Karen Todd-Larsen, I also met Cathi in her first year of teaching Junior High School. She was a wonderful teacher and dedicated a lot of hours after school to the student government that I was involved with. She had a sporty Mustang car with a stick shift and taught me how to drive a standard in her new car. Talk about misplaced confidence ! She was an inspiration not only to myself but to many other students as well. She will be deeply missed.

Condolence from Amy-Jo Strutt on October 30th, 2016 3:52 PM

Mrs. Ramsden, Russ and family,

I first met Cathi in 1979 at Churchill. Cathi was our volleyball coach and with her determination, compassion and love, she guided us through to become city champions that year. Even with those well manicured nails, she a killer volley. Cathi was an inspirational teacher, mentor, leader but most of all friend. Many of us would not be the people were are today had it not been for Cathi. She an amazing teacher but more importantly, an amazing role model for all the young women that crossed her path. May you take comfort in knowing the enormous impact your daughter and sister had on so many.

Condolence from Tamara Palmer Seiler on November 3rd, 2016 4:22 PM

I was very saddened to hear of Cathi’s passing. I can’t say that I knew her well since I met her only recently when I had the pleasure of working with her through the Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners; nevertheless, in that short time, I was very favourably impressed with her pleasant personality, her willingness to pitch in when something needed to be done, and her generosity in sharing her time and talents with others. She was the kind of person who made the world a better place, and I feel lucky to have known her, however briefly. I send my sincere condolences to Cathi’s family.

Condolence from Marsha Levy on November 4th, 2016 9:20 AM

I knew Cathi through the Calgary Board of Education. Our paths crossed many times during our careers. I always appreciated Cathi’s quick wit and positive attitude in getting something accomplished. Her smile always brightened the day. I am very sorry for your loss. She had a great impact on many people and that is something to be cherished.

Condolence from Patsy Cross on November 5th, 2016 4:53 AM

My memories of Cathi are many and varied. We watched hours and hours of movies together. I sang next to her in choir years ago – which helped me immensely. Some hiking, some board games and a great trip to Wales. Moving away from Calgary meant a bit of a hole in my life and now the silence. I will miss her and carry my sorrow. My sincere condolences for your grief at the loss of a bright light in your family. So many people loved Cathi.

Condolence from Derek Powell on November 5th, 2016 7:20 AM

Cathi was a dear friend who came into our lives when she was on her Master’s degree in Nottingham. She remained a true friend to Derek and Jo, and daughters Livia and Eloisa. We treasure memories of our time with her in the UK and at her house when we visited. She was a generous and warm friend, with whom you could have fascinating conversations on any subject. She had a real gift for being with young people – Ellie and Livia in our case. She was a wonderful listener giving you time and emotional support when you needed it. She had a real sense of fun with a great laugh to go with it (and oh, the laughs we had!). She brought light, laughter and songs into our lives, including songs for the kids when they were young that we still sing. We are blessed to have known her. Our deepest condolences to those closest to her. We send you our love. Derek, Jo and family

Condolence from Bonnie Gaetz-Simpson on November 6th, 2016 9:47 AM

Cathi’s family; Cathi’s loss to you is so heartfelt but please know it is shared by many friends and colleagues. Her love of life was obvious in her pursuits of learning, books, outdoors, music and the many relationships she nurtured all her life. Cathi left us all much too soon, and she will be missed. As you carry her in your hearts, know many others do so as well. Cathi’s life touched so many people.
My sincere condolences.

From friends in Keyworth (England)
To Russ, Keith, Joyce and all of the Ramsden Family
We are all so sad at Cathi’s passing but give thanks for her amazing life. She has been such good friend to us all. We have enjoyed and appreciated so much laughter, caring, love and friendship with her. There have been wonderful holidays here in the UK with her and for some of us such a warm welcome to Canada for which she has been the best ambassador ever.
During her Celebration Service we, here in England, gathered at the same time to remember with much affection a dear friend who led such a full and productive life and who enriched all around her.
We will continue to enjoy so many happy memories of a special person to whom we owe so much and are grateful for allowing us to share Cathi with you.
Our love to you all.
Maureen & Graham, Chris & Malcolm, June & Peter, Jenny & Geoff, Gwenda & Alan, Gwyn and Derrick, Ann & Malcolm, Gill & Robin and Leslie.

Condolence from Ruth Roberts on November 8th, 2016 8:43 AM

One of my best friends in the world left us and I am so sad. The adventures and trips we went on will not be forgotten. She was a kind, generous and (especially) hilarious friend. We had so many secret codes that when we looked at each other we would break into laughter. You can’t do that with too many people. Loved you Cathi. You were awesome!!!
Ruth Roberts.

I am so sorry for your loss. Cathi was always bigger than life and I can’t believe I will not bump into her somewhere. She was a warm, loving person whom I learned to like and respect very much over our many years singing together.
