June 30, 1926 – Klimkowka, Poland

August 2, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Jan Rajchel, beloved husband of Janina Rajchel, on August 2, 2018 at the age of 92 years.

Jan was born and raised in Klimkowka, Poland. Growing up in a farming community and living his youth under German occupation, he learned the value of good work ethic and discipline. After serving two years in the Polish Army, he returned to Klimkowka, where he met his wife Janina, the new school teacher. They soon married and started a family with two children Grazyna (Margaret) and Waclaw (Vince), all while earning his Geology degree at the University in Krakow.

In 1964, the young family immigrated to Canada to begin a new life in Brooks, where Jan traded his geology career to work in the construction industry. Soon after moving to Calgary three years later, using his keen entrepreneurial skills, he started up his successful cribbing business and later a trucking company, becoming a part of the Calgary construction scene. His many interests include geography, politics and travelling. Most people will remember Jan for his hard work, eagerness to help others and a very witty sense of humour.

Jan will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Janina; his two children Margaret (Don), and Vince (Cathy); four grandchildren Monica (Gair), Larisa (Clinton), John (Bonnie), Christine (Will); and great grandchildren Maximilian, Brook, Karst, and Evan. Jan is also survived by his brother Stanislaw (Urszula); sister Zofia (Stanislaw); sister-in-law Anna, and several nieces and nephews in Poland and Canada.

Jan was predeceased by his sister Helena (Mieczyslaw); and his brother Wladyslaw.

What a wonderful legacy he left behind, a sterling reputation and work history, a faithful wife and well educated children and grandchildren. In the short time we knew him we respected him and honor this legacy by our son joining this family unit and being part of what he has accomplished. You must be proud of all he has done, cherish these along with all who knew him.

Mr. & Mrs. Rachel were long time friends of my parents. Growing up we all hosted each other for Sunday dinner or the holidays. Nevertheless it was hard not to talk about the cold war and geopolitics at the table. Mr.Rachel always had like it said was a witty observational sense of humor. During the days of the Soviet Union and their unstoppable hockey team, one year they totally demolished team Canada. At that time Scotty Bowman was the coach as the Montreal Canadians were the top team in the NHL, so naturally they picked Scotty Bowman to be the coach. However when we got beat badly by the Soviets, Mr, Rachel said it best. Scotty bowman did nothing but stand around chewing his gum, watching his team get beat. As the Ronald Reagan era moved in and Canada elected Brian Mulroney, who came to be one of the most disliked Prime Ministers in Canada, me and Mr. Rachel found humor in it all, however I feel we went down as the only 2 people in Canada who were left that supported and liked Brian Mulroney and John Crosby.Mr. Rachel made good political observations specifically of John Crosby involving his arrogance towards John turner of the liberal party. That being said, Mr. Rachel and I always had a good laugh about politics both in Canada and Globally. On another side, Mr. Rachel had a very unique taste in Cars, His lineup of cars included a LADA, a very used VW Jetta and and small Toyota tercel station wagon. I guess he found fun in fixing them and mining for unique parts to keep them on the road. He sure loved his little LADA, regardless of the fact that when he came over one time, I got the impression it needed struts as it bounced around. When all is said and done, his witty humor brought laughter and happiness to his friends no doubt. In conclusion, Mr. Rachel and his family and my family were in my opinion the greatest generation of all. Came to Canada, settled in Western Canada and became the backbone of many communities throughout, raised a family, created parishes and promoted both polish and canadian culture throughout. Rest in Peace.

Droga Pani Rajchel, Grazynka, Wacek i rodzina! Serdeczne wsoplczucia. Pan Rajcel, to byl dobry czlowiek. But he was more than a good man, he was a great man. His tall handsome stature was equaled by his great sense of humour, great work ethic, family, community service and eagerness to help others. As an immigrant to Canada, he built a great life for his family, embracing what was valuable both Canadian and Polish. He worked hard but always found time to help others, like my mom, a freshly immigrant school teacher in Brooks,AB. Pani and Pan Rajchel embraced her and their help did not cease when they both resided in Calgary. As years wore on, with numerous dinner parties, thanks to Pani Rajchel’s vast and overwhelming hosting, Pan Rajchel kept us amused with his witty humor and commentary on current events. Pan Rajchel always made me laugh. I still remember many of his humorous comments, but my favourite is Castro “in his pyjamas!” Humor aside, Pan Rajcel, along with Pani Rajchel did not retire their acts of kindness even in their golden years. When my widowed elderly father resided in his home, Pan Rajchel would visit numerous times in the week, sharing his politic wit, newspapers and funny stories with my ailing father! Also he always came with a treat, a lovely good ol’ Polish meal prepared by Pani Rajchel. So there you are, just simple memories of a great man, Pan Rajchel. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore. Love you Pan Rajchel xxxooo
