June 10, 1927 – Dublin, Ireland
August 28, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
Mary (Vera) Rainsford passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 28, 2019.
Vera was born in Dublin, Ireland to Kathleen and William Nelson on June 10, 1927. She lived in Manchester, England during World War II (off and on from 1941-1945 due to travel restrictions) and often talked about going to the bomb shelters each night and how even after the war people continued to live in the shelters. Vera met Jimmy Rainsford, who worked as a bus conductor, on her bus rides to work and they married in November 1949. Jimmy immigrated to Calgary in 1957 and Vera followed in May 1958 with their children, Jim and Kathleen. Their daughter Laoise (Alice) was born in Calgary in 1959. Vera worked at Modern Packaging as a machine operator from 1961 until her retirement. She was an accomplished seamstress; she could see an outfit in a movie and come home, make a pattern using newspapers and sew the outfit. Vera made her own wedding gown as well as her bridesmaid’s gown. She would sew dresses and knit matching sweaters for her daughters.
Vera is survived by her son and daughters, Jim (Cindy) Rainsford, Kathleen (Willis) Winter, and Alice (Sheldon) Erick; grandchildren, Teresa (Robert), Jenny (Trevor), Geoff (Katie), Stephen, Kerry and Tom; great-grandchildren, Zach, Aidan, Ruari and Gaia; brother Jack Nelson (Kathleen), sisters-in-law, Mary Goggins and Detta Scully; and many nieces and nephews in Ireland and England. Vera was predeceased by her dear husband Jimmy, her beloved sister Anne Goucher, sister Alice Nelson, brothers-in-law, Robert and Edward Rainsford.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church (321 – 90th Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Henry Rosenbaum presiding.
