RAFAAT, Dr. Massoud

May 11, 1926 – Tehran, Iran
July 1, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Dr. Massoud of Calgary, AB, passed away on July 1, 2018 at the age of 92 years.

Massoud was born in Tehran, Iran in 1926; the eldest of four siblings. He left for Geneva, Switzerland as a young man to pursue his medical studies. Following the successful completion of his degree, he relocated to England where he undertook his residency in pediatrics. After serving briefly as a physician in both Abadan, Iran and in Turku, Finland, he and his wife braved the frontiers of Western Canada, moving to Regina, SK where they lived for approximately six years. It was in Regina that their children, Susan and Tony were born. In 1967, the family was lured to Calgary where chinook winds promised some respite from minus forty temperatures. They also took the opportunity to enjoy the close proximity to the mountains, frequently heading to Banff for picnics and hiking.

For the entirety of his life Massoud was a devout member of the Baha’i faith. He served for over 20 years as a member of the local spiritual assembly. He lived his faith every day of his life. Massoud loved his work, especially his young patients. He was a man of integrity; a true gentleman with a warm smile and a great chuckle.

Massoud is survived by his brother, Nasser; sister, Nora; children, Tony and Susan; their spouses Janice and Jeff; and his beloved grandchildren, Thomas and Kristin.

Massoud was predeceased by his sister Zia Bayandor.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. 6. Bev Jaremko :

In 1975 with my first child, a son, I consulted Dr. Rafaat. He was wonderful, so reassuring.
He suggested a feeding strategy that I then used with great success for all my four kids.. One incident stays in my mind. I never had any brothers and did not know much about babies. In the examining room I had to remove my son’s diaper for a quick change and during that time took no precautions, actually unaware that he might shoot some more urine right up at me. Dr.Rafaat came into the room and looked at me and smiled, saying I was ‘brave”.
I am so glad to hear he had a long and happy life. He made a difference to a lot of people.

My sincere condolences to your family. Dr. Rafaat (or Dr. Rabbit as my girls called him) was our Pediatrician until my girls aged out and had to switch doctors. He was a kind and gentle man, had an exceptional way with the children, always had an appointment when we needed one. He was even more reassuring to us as parents that made us feel competent in handling our families. He helped us through a 3 year long difficult time with one of children – he was never judgemental – always calm and caring. They just don’t make doctors like that anymore – he was truly exceptional. And when I ran into him occasionally after his retirement, he was the same warm, welcoming and gentle soul. I am happy he was able to enjoy several years of retirement – he was one in a million. Rest in peace Sir.

    Dear family of Dr. Rafaat,
It was our great good fortune to have Dr. Rafaat as pediatrician to our children Natasha and Imraan, and the added bonus of being neighbours in University Heights. When the children were unwell he would often stop by on his way home if he could, saving us the trip to his office downtown. He was a great source of comfort to all of us. A gentleman and a gentle man, may his soul Rest In Peace, and may the Almighty grant you strength and His grace to cope with this milestone. Amen.
With much love and many prayers.

    Dear family,
Please accept my condolences on the loss of your beloved father and grandfather.
I met Dr. Rafaat in July, 1969 when I was blessed to have him as our children’s doctor for many years. He was such a gift to our family. As a physician, he was an extremely rare individual.
When I think of Dr. Rafaat, I still see his warm smile and hear his comforting voice and delightful chuckle.
As our first son had some ongoing health issues for the first two years of his life, Dr. Rafaat was always a great source of comfort and caring.
I still remember ours whereby he would talk about his Tony and Susan with such pride.
He was a rare gem, the kindest, dearest, most gentle man, and I have thought about him so many times over the years. His presence made a lasting impression.
As a physician he was the model. He was one of those rare individuals I shall never forget.
May your memories of this wonderful man comfort you through the sadness of the loss of your father and grandfather.

Hello to the family of Dr. Rafaat. I was saddened to hear of his passing. He was my 2 daughters pediatrician from 1969 until they reached 18. As a young mom, he helped me through all the medical crisis of 2 precious children. I always felt that Dr. Rafaat also felt that they were precious as well. When I say his name to myself , I see him immediately in front of my eyes with that smile upon his face. A true gentleman, kind and gentle always. It was an honor to have him in my life.

    Dear Tony and Susan,
I was saddened to hear about the passing of your father. I had the honour of working for him from 1988-1997. He was a kind and gentle man that truly cared about everyone of his patients. He always had great stories to tell me about his past growing up riding motor bikes, attending university in Switzerland, to finding a newborn baby in his car. He talked fondly of you and was very proud of you both. I lost contact with him a few years ago but am happy to hear he had a long life.
May you find comfort in all the wonderful memories you have of him.

  17. To the family of Dr. Rafaat,
I have been meaning to write a note for some time. We were fortunate to have Dr. Rafaat, as the paediatrician for our two sons in the 1970’s. He was always concerned, gentle, and kind. Also – his office was always predictably ‘on time’ – no small feat. I am happy to know that he lived a long and good life. I hope you have many wonderful memories of your life with him as your Father.
