RACKSTRAW, William “Bill” Liddle

May 17, 1925 – Sunderland, England
September 18, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

Bill Rackstraw passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at the age of 91 years.

Born in Sunderland, Bill began working to help support his family at the age of 14. He became a ships’ engineer, a career that allowed him to travel the world. He and his wife Daphne and their young son Steve emigrated to Canada in 1956. Their daughter Lisa was born in 1964. After moving to Calgary, Bill worked as a production accountant for Western Decalta and later Pembina Pipeline. Although he was proud of his Geordie heritage, Bill loved his new home and enjoyed camping, hiking and cross-country skiing with his family. He had an artistic spirit and spent his spare time drawing colorful caricatures, photographing wildlife and playing the harmonica.
Bill’s trademark greeting was a hearty handshake and a “glad to know you!” He was an incredibly positive and friendly person and a wonderful dad and papa. Bill was never more happy than when he could spend time with his beloved granddaughter Genny.

Bill truly loved the natural world and had a gentle spirit. When he walked in a room the cats and dogs of the home would unfailingly appear at his side for a cuddle and an ear scratch. We are so grateful to him for his legacy of love and caring and for sharing his great joy to be a Canadian.

We would like express our sincere thanks to the many compassionate, thoughtful friends that reached out to support and reassure Bill during his illness and to our dear family friend Marra Motos. We would also like to share our heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate, tender, loving care Bill received from the AHS Palliative Care Team and the Salvation Army Agape Hospice staff and volunteers. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Bill Rackstraw, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: 403-241-0044.
