Daniel Quinn, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday May 24, 2016 at Foothills Country Hospice at the age of 73.

Dan was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on December 21, 1942. He moved his young family from Cape Breton to Calgary in 1967 where he had a long and productive career with the Calgary Board of Education. Dan was a founding parishioner of St Bonaventure Church. He will be fondly remembered for his love of Celtic tunes, good jokes and a hearty laugh. Dan found joy in the outdoors and was passionate about coaxing trout to an expertly placed dry fly. He was as devoted as one can be to the wellbeing and happiness of his family. We will miss him dearly and we cherish the life he shared with us.

He is predeceased by his parents Daniel and Teresa (nee Campbell) and survived by his wife of 52 years Marie (nee Starzomski), sons Michael (Cynthia) and Neil (Sandy) of Calgary, daughter Janet (Ron) of Campbell River and five grandchildren Megan, Riley, Emma, Olivia and Daniel, brother Joe (Mary) and sister Sheila (Don).

The family is grateful to Dr. R. Sinha, Units 46 & 47 at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the wonderful staff at the Foothills Country Hospice.

BONAVENTURE CATHOLIC CHURCH (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E.). Dear Quinn Family,
Although I don’t know all of you – I did meet Dan & Marie through Mike & Emma and always enjoyed seeing Dan when he came to pick up Mike from the airport after a conference trip or at one of Emma’s horse shows or other events. He was always warm and welcoming and clearly loved being with his family. He shared many good fish stories and always treated me like a friend. I am so sorry for your loss and can only hope that with time happy memories will be all that you remember. My heart is with you and I am glad that you will all be together to support each other.

Condolence from Jeff Campbell on May 26th, 2016 9:57 AM

Dear Quinn family

Dan was a very special person to me and so many colleagues within CBE. His humor, infectious laugh, and care for others enabled him to make a difference to other peoples’ lives – including mine. I fondly remember Dan laughing so hard he had to take off his glasses to wipe his eyes. Sharing an office space with Dan for a couple years, I saw how tradesmen and principals, secretaries and teachers alike were drawn to him. He had a great way of meeting with people from a variety of backgrounds – all left feeling better and like someone was on their side. While I haven’t seen Dan in a few years, I, like many others feel the loss with his passing.

Please accept my condolences to your family.
Rest well Danny… here’s to a life, well-lived.

Marie and family-

Thoughts are with everyone during this time.

Uncle Danny was such a gentleman, kind soul and he always genuinely cared about what each of us were up to. He was there for Dad during our own tough times with Mom’s illness, which is something that will not be forgotten.

Much love during such a tough time-

Condolence from Glenn Puschner on May 27th, 2016 5:21 PM

Dear Quinn Family,

Although you don’t know who I am you should know that Dan was a huge influence on my life. He and I worked together at Russell Sports. It was Dan who suggested I apply for a managers position at Bass Pro. He changed my life dramatically. I am sure he influenced a number of people throughout his life without even knowing it.
Keep in your hearts that he is looking down on everyone who knew him and still influencing them. Smiling, laughing and giving sage advice.
My heart goes out to you all in your time of sorrow.

Kind regards,
Glenn Puschner

Condolence from Margaret Powicki on May 27th, 2016 6:28 PM

To the Quinn Family,
I send these thoughts on behalf of the Pride Family formerly of 80 West St. in Whitney Pier. Our family has many happy memories of living next door to the Quinn’s. My Aunt Evelyn Pride Macaulay ( age 94) and I shared some of those thoughts today.
My Twin Sister Betsy and I traveled from Massachusetts every summer to spend school vacation with our grandparents and most especially with Sheila, Joey and Danny. Going back and forth between the two houses, along with trips to the “Show” and Polar Bear were just some of the highlights of our vacation. I now spend 4 months of the year in Boularderie, Cape Breton and enjoy welcoming my family for their school vacations. Each year I take them on a tour and tell them about my childhood friends and what it was like to spend a summer at “The Pier”.
My thoughts are with you all.
Margaret ( Antonioli) Powicki
