August 29, 1927 – Trautenau, Czechoslovakia
July 16, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

We are sad to announce that our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and sister-in-law passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the age of 86 years. Herta was born in Trautenau, Czechoslovakia in August 1927. At the age of 11, Herta and her family immigrated to Canada via Wales and homesteaded in the Tupper Creek/Tomslake area of British Columbia.

Later Herta’s family moved to Calgary; here she met her future spouse, Reinhold (Bill) Przeczek. Following his return from WWII, Herta married Reinhold on September 14, 1946. They spent 62 years together, raised two children, and after retiring they spent many years travelling the globe.

Herta was a kind, loving soul, and always enjoyed being with friends and family. She adored her two granddaughters, and spent as much time as possible with them. She was always ecstatic when they arrived for a visit, and would talk about it for days. Telling “real” stories to her granddaughters resulted in Herta writing a family history. She also coached others who wanted to write their own family stories.

Herta was an avid reader and enjoyed many genres of literature. This love led Herta to participate in several book clubs throughout her life. When faced with an empty nest, Herta joined the Calgary Field Naturalist’s Society where she enjoyed bird watching. While a member, she developed a love for the environment, and she continued to support a number of environmental organizations for most of her life. In addition, Herta contributed a chapter in the Society’s guide to Nose Hill Park. She also enjoyed painting watercolour landscapes.

Loving her and missing her are her daughter Mary Ann; her son and daughter-in-law John and Corrinne deZoete of Cranbrook, BC; her granddaughters, Kara of Smithers, BC and Nicola of Edmonton, AB; her sister Trude Tackaberry; and brother-in-law Frank Richter.

A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Owl Foundation, R.R.1, Vineland Station, ON, L0R 2E0, or the Nature Conservancy of Canada, 36 Eglinton Avenue West, Suite 400, Toronto, ON, Canada M4R 1A1, or to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, 350 Michael Cowpland Drive, Kanata, ON K2M 2W1,

In living memory of Herta Przeczek, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  3. To John, Mary Anne and the family,

Please accept our condolences on the loss of your Mother (Herta).

I knew Herta to be a kind, caring and thoughtful person. My family lived next door to the Przeczeks for over 30 years and as a friend of John, I frequently visited Herta and the family. “Mrs. Prez” was always hospitable & happy to see us, always taking a moment to catch up on how we were doing. She was patient and understanding with John & the boys as we carried on doing the activities inherent of teenagers growing up.

I will always remember Herta’s smile and kind manner, she will be deeply missed by everyone.

    Ted & family
