PRATT (Piper), Wendy Jim

August 25, 1957 – October 7, 2017. Aged 60 years
When exploring, sideroads make life interesting and Wendy experienced many in her 60 years. Born in Revelstoke, brought up in Victoria, Portland and mainly Vancouver and living in Calgary for 27 years Wendy had many roles. The most important being mother to Megan, Ben and Ian. Nana to Maddalyn and Max, mother-in-law to Orest, beloved daughter to Shirley Piper Campbell and the late Robert (Bob) Piper, stepdaughter to Alex Campbell, sister to Jeff (Julia), aunt to Kate and Haley and friend to many. And wife to Colin. Her outlook on life and death were unique to her and can only be partially understood by others. Upon leaving CIBC with 12 years service she retrained as a teacher’s aide specializing in severe behavior children for the Calgary Board of Education. Even though it was – at times – exhausting, she loved the interaction and challenge. Health issues put an end to this chapter of her life and she focused on her own well-being and in caring for her new grand-daughter, Maddalyn, on a full-time basis. Megan became a full-time stay at home mom with the arrival of Max and “Nana’s Day Care” became part-time. She imparted wisdom, insight and guidance to those she loved and cared for. She had a wicked sense of humour and was quick to laugh at herself when need be. She loved gardening and tried to impart lessons to Colin as to care, upkeep, what to plant and where. She was a member of the Calgary Youth Justice Committee and a speaker on behalf of the Terry Fox Foundation and speaking to approximately 18,000 students at all levels. When faced with her most recent adventure she tackled it with her usual determination but realistic outlook. Wendy passed peacefully with her family close by as always. We will miss her deeply and remember her with love and appreciation for all that she has given us. To remember her and celebrate her life there will be a service in Calgary at 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 17th at Holy Nativity Anglican Church, 12707 Bonaventure DR SE and in Vancouver at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 5th, 2017 at the Point Grey Golf and Country Club, 3350 SW Marine Drive, Vancouver.
An immense appreciation is extended to the staff and volunteers at the hospice who made her stay comfortable and loving. In lieu of flowers donations to the Foothills Country Hospice (Box 274, Okotoks, AB T1S 1A5) would be greatly appreciated. Internment will be in Revelstoke, B.C.

Condolence Messages

  1. Martin Stretton :

My condolences on your great loss. I have known Wendy since she was 15 years old, and we remained friends all these years. Even though we didn’t speak regularly every call felt like we had just spoken yesterday. Wendy and Colin were a great match and I am glad they found each other.
I am glad she has finally found relief for all the pain she has been through for so many years, and I will never forget her.

  6. Colin and Family. I was saddened to hear about your loss of Wendy. To Wendy’s children, and grand-children, I have not had the pleasure of meeting you, but when we were together, she talked lovingly about all of you. I met Wendy at our mutual friend, Danny’s home. We hit it off instantly, it’s like we knew each other for years. Loved her sense of humour, and her zest for life. May the memories of all the good times you have had together, help to bring you peace and comfort during the difficult days to come. Remember her with a smile, I know I sure will; I feel very privileged to have known Wendy, and call her my “friend”. Never be afraid to speak Wendy’s name, or talk about Wendy. Sincere condolences to everyone this wonderful woman leaves behind. Colin, thinking of you at this sad time……

  7. I knew Wendy many years ago at St. James’ Church in Vancouver. Megan and my daughter, Elizabeth, were playmates when they were 4 years old. I’ve thought of Wendy often over the years, and always with a smile! She was so bubbly and full of joy – you couldn’t help but be uplifted in her presence. My sincere sympathy to all of her family and friends – she was greatly loved, and will be greatly missed.
