POWELL, Andrew Anthony

February 19, 1924 – Vilna, Alberta
October 18, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Andrew (Andy) Anthony Powell of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the age of 94 years.

Andy was born in Vilna, Alberta. Building on his farming background, Andy received in 1951, a Bachelor of Agriculture degree from the University of Toronto (Guelph). Andy met and married Minnie, the love of his life, and together they raised five boys who kept him actively involved in scouting, hockey, and coaching baseball and other sports. His career in financial management with Mobil Oil in Calgary also took the family to Texas.

Faith was important to Andy, he was always active in his church and was a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

Andy’s long, active and fulfilling retirement lasted almost as long as his career in the oil and gas industry. He helped form the Mocana Club for Mobil retirees and kept his financial management skills current by assisting the Bow Cliff and Forest Lawn seniors associations with their accounting. Golf and bowling were sports that Andy dearly loved and pursued well into his 90’s. He was a longtime member of the Inglewood Golf & Curling Club, serving on their board. In his later years, Andy became a prolific artist.

Andy will be lovingly remembered by family and friends for his keen sense of humour, easy going presence and his dedication to family and community. He is survived by his five sons, Larry, David, James (Cindy), Alan (Carolyn), Don (Marie); his two sisters, Josephine, Olga (Leo); his three brothers, Frank, Walter (Olga), Sidney (Irene); his eight grandchildren, Carolyn (Jay), Michael (Krista), Sarah (Michael), Kristen, Christopher, Megan (Nevan), Erinn, Christina; and his seven great-grandchildren, Anderson, Elise, Olivia, Everett, Grayson, Everly and Uriah. Andy was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Minnie; his parents Victor and Anne; four brothers, Michael, Paul, Steve, Stanley; and his four sisters, Jean, Maria, Barbara and Rose.
