July 15, 1924 – Montreal, Quebec
July 13, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Philip Pomerance, born July 15, 1924 passed away peacefully on July 13, 2019 on the cusp of his 95th birthday.

Phil led a long, full and vibrant life, remaining youthful well into his senior years. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Ida, with whom he shared a 62 year romance. Phil was a loving and devoted father to his son, Barrie (Brenda) of Calgary, AB and his daughter Renee of Windsor, ON. He will also be lovingly remembered by his sister, Evelyn Israel of Montreal, QC; his grandchild, Tristen Chute-Pomerance (Justin) of Calgary, AB; his step-grandchildren, Delan and Jill Sharpe and Alaine Haugen (Tyler), all of Calgary, AB; and his great-grandchildren, Stella, Ruby and Wesley Haugen; his sister-in-law Edith Pomerance; and his numerous nieces and nephews.

For over 50 years, Phil, together with his late brother Lou owned and operated Western Outfitters, a Calgary landmark founded by their father, Isadore. A highly successful businessman, Phil was known for his work ethic, his business acumen, and his integrity. Much as he loved “the store”, he embraced his retirement years with equal enthusiasm. Taking up golf for the first time at the age of 70, he played well into his 90s, but not well enough to shoot his age. An avid reader, he never lost his passion for knowledge about the world around him. He defied the effects of aging and loved to surprise people by disclosing his true age. He took delight in kibbitzing and making people laugh, and his sense of humour continued unabated in his final days. To know him was truly to love him. He cared deeply about his family and his many dear friends. An extraordinary man, he will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and compassion.

Funeral Services will be held at Temple B’Nai Tikvah, (900 47 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 3C8 [1]) Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Erlton Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sarcee Hospice by contacting them directly at (403) 685 6460.

Arrangements in care of the CHEVRA KADISHA OF CALGARY, Telephone: 403-244-4717.

Phil will be dearly missed by his sister Evelyn (Montreal) for whom this is a huge loss. Phil and Evelyn spoke across the miles every day and shared laughter, tears, and many cherished memories. They each considered themselves to be so lucky to have a wonderful sibling to share life with. Phil will also be missed by all his nieces and nephews who loved and cherished him.
May his memory be a blessing.

Condolence from Maureen Gurevitch Katz on July 15th, 2019 2:51 PM

My sincere condolences to the family. Such a terrific man. I loved spending time with him when I visited my mom (Annabelle Gurevitch) at Trinity. He was always such a pleasure to be around and share meals with ( and boy could he pack the food away!) Also such a great sense of humour. I will miss him!

Condolence from Christine Sazie-Stewart on July 15th, 2019 5:09 PM

Phil’s niece Beverly Israel (mom: Evelyn) was my best friend at West Hill High in Montreal. We lost touch for over 30 years but thanks to Classmates.com, we reconnected. Bev was in Florida, I was in Calgary. She talked lovingly of her uncles Lou and Phil. When Bev’s daughter came to Calgary a couple of years ago, I met Phil. I cannot recall the last time I have met such a charming, warm, funny and vibrant man. Then and there I asked if I could call him Uncle Phil, just like Bev.
I so enjoyed our outings for coffee, walks and lunch at the Lougheed House. He would tease acquaintances by introducing me as his niece and it made me proud for that moment!
I visited Uncle Phil just last week. Despite fatigue and coming to grips with life’s end, he continued to crack jokes and banter. I was hoping to visit on his 95th birthday, but he left us all on his own terms and when he felt it was time.
My most heartfelt condolences to Phil’s family and many friends. It was an honour to have known him.

Condolence from Sue Groleau on July 15th, 2019 5:12 PM

Condolence from Gail Whiteford on July 15th, 2019 6:56 PM

I remember so much of Phil from so many years ago when I worked at Western Outfitters at its Macleod Trail location. The biggest memory is of him behind the counter with his cigar. He taught me about eating Montreal smoked meat and soup from the cafe next , and he taught me how precious family is. My thoughts to you all with good memories and love.

Condolence from Robin Reboul on July 17th, 2019 4:33 PM

I am so sorry for your loss. My grandmother died at 92 and people would say-“ well she lived a long life “. Yes but it doesn’t make the loss any easier. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time. Take care.

Condolence from Brent and Keenan on July 18th, 2019 4:48 PM

Barrie…just received word from Larry Brown of your father’s passing. Unfortunately his word did not come in time, or Sue and I would have been at his funeral on Tuesday last. Our hearts are with you in this time of grief. It would have been nice had he made it to his 95th birthday but obviously he was required sooner than his birthday and is at peace, looking over you and your family, as well as now being with your Mom.
Brent & Sue
